Roseanne Barr sparked controversy this week for appearing to promote a far-right conspiracy theory about the Parkland shooting student-activist David Hogg.
On Tuesday evening, just before the revival of her ABC sitcom "Roseanne" premiered, Barr tweeted the words "NAZI SALUTE" in response to a Twitter user who tagged Hogg in a tweet. She later deleted her tweet.
Barr, a vocal Trump supporter with a history of promoting right-wing conspiracy theories, seemed to be referencing a far-right conspiracy theory that Hogg raised a Nazi salute at a March for Our Lives rally on Saturday.
As Mic noted, a number of Twitter users, including Chrissy Teigen, criticized Barr for the tweet, while some called out ABC for giving Barr a platform with her revived sitcom.

I was never a big TV watcher when I was young, so I didn't follow this show. I'll be sure to not watch it now again too.

(57,204 posts)"embrace the suck". It works especially well with getting old. If they want to carry my dead auto battery for me across the Napa parking lot regardless of my being completely capable on some 100F July day, well I embrace the suck of being old and get the benefit of some kid doing my schlepping.
Getting older wasn't anywhere as tough as "they" said. Now I finally am old and so far life is still good.

(14,093 posts)Trump is bringing her up in speeches and calling her (unlike many of the Parkland families, for whom he had no time), and Hannity is begging her to come on his show.
Her extremism and batshit history needs to be focused on, as they're trying to use her to normalize Trumpism and push the old "economic anxiety" canard.
In her new show, she claimed Trump won, because he "talked about jobs," as if Hillary wasn't doing that at nearly every speech and getting ignored by the media in favor of "but her emails."
The real reason Roseanne backed Trump can be found in her Pizzageterism, birtherism, Seth Rich trooferism, etc. A large number of Americans have fallen into believing whackadoodle conspiracy propaganda when it adheres to their racist worldview.

(5,969 posts)Maybe it is too obvious but what I miss in these articles is someone pointing out that raising your first is not the Nazi salute. The Nazi salute was with an open hand. These stories always leave some doubt as if raising your fist was used by the Nazis as well.

(1,770 posts)Barr even supported Hillary for President at one point. But some sort of disease has taken her over. That or she's just decided to be as big of an attention whore as the Shithole. I feel bad for the Left cast that have to work with her in this mode (I.e. Goodman, Metcalf, Chalke, Gilbert...etc.)

(1,770 posts)absolutely HATED her. She was a huge evangelical tea party wingnut and if I happend to have the TV tuned to a Roseanne repeat while she was in the room, she'd go apeshit. Meanwhile I had to put up with her constant viewing of False Noise.

(1,148 posts)I grew up working class in the Midwest and was really grateful for the show. She used to be left. There's no excuse for her behavior now, and I'm wondering if I should bother watching the new show, but I do wonder about some people who claim to have "always" hated her. I think they probably have class issues. I mean all of the pearl clutching about the national anthem and stuff is really illiberal.
Liberalagogo
(1,770 posts)About wondering about some people that claim they "always" hated her.
There are several celebrities whose work I enjoyed, even though they turned out to be wingnuts or at least conservatives. Most are relatively quiet about it, but some get in your face with it. And left, or right, I'm not fond of that.
It's a sort of okay-ish sitcom, but it makes no sense. Suddenly she's the right-wing working class woman, but still has this very diverse and liberal family. I just hope they drop the politics off the show, not as much because of the right-wing nuttiness support, but because it just makes no sense, continuity-wise.
It's only eight episodes. I hope ABC doesn't renew it, but chances are they will.
It's the new thing in Hollywood----sitcom revivals. Fuller House, Will & Grace, Roseanne, Murphy Brown, and now, Mad About You. What's next, the return of Friends and Frasier?
