9th Circuit Court of Appeals judge dies at 87

Source: The Hill

Judge Stephen Reinhardt, a circuit judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and a champion of liberal causes on the court, died Thursday at the age of 87.

BuzzFeed News reports that Reinhardt died unexpectedly during an appointment at a dermatologist's office Thursday afternoon, according to a court spokesman. The 87-year-old judge was first appointed to the bench by former President Carter in 1980.

Reinhardt, who served on one of the notoriously liberal courts in California, issued many prominent decisions during his tenure including a 2012 decision striking down California's ban on gay marriage.

Reinhardt also came into conflict with the Trump administration in recent months, declaring last year that unaccompanied minor undocumented immigrants have the right to periodic bond hearings as well as a separate decision calling a Trump order to deport a Mexican man "inhumane."

A wise and brilliant jurist and a great friend, Stephen Reinhardt of the 9th Circuit, died today. As recently as yesterday, he was as vigorous and vibrant as ever. His intellectual rigor was matched only by his progressive instincts and compassion. The world is a darker place.

My wife argued her first 9th Circuit case in front of him. He wrote the majority opinion in her favor.

In addition to everything else, Judge Reinhardt once asked Marilyn Monroe out. She suggested the next weekend but he had to travel to New Haven to start Law School. Another good reason to attend your nearby state school.
