Syrian air defenses shot down 13 missiles: state TV
Source: Rueters
(Reuters) - Syrian air defenses shot down 13 missiles fired in a U.S.-led attack on the country on Saturday, Syrian state TV said.
It said the missiles had been shot down in the Kiswah area south of Damascus, the capital.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a total of three scientific research centers had been hit in the attacks - two in Damascus and one in the Homs area - in addition to military bases in Damascus.
The Observatory said all the bases and facilities struck in the attack had been evacuated by the Syrian government earlier this week.

(4,006 posts)if we and NATO launched 100 missiles and dropped bombs, that 13 didn't really do much, This a.m.'s TV vids do show lots of ground explosions.

(17,912 posts)they're subsonic. They do hug the terrain making them tougher targets, but Syria has a Russian air defense net and knew tomahawks were probably the weapon of choice and the rough window of deployment. Defending airspace against cruise missile attack has been a priority for air defense systems since the early 80's. If they shot some down, it's no biggie. With 50 to 100 inbounds, they'll get some, but not all.

(10,870 posts)We know how many missiles were assigned to each specific target. It's pretty easy to see in daylight how many hit their assigned target.

American President has WAY too much military power without civilian oversight...this is a deceleration of war on another country...wasn't that a responsibility of Congress?

(5,954 posts)...and could actually COUNT things.
The only thing that surpassed the amount of fictional Serbian tanks that NATO claimed to have destroyed from the air (about five times the number they actually did) was the number of fictional NATO aircraft the Serbs claimed to have shot down. (I think they were off by a factor of ten, or something...)
We just have to accept the fact that everything we hear about this for the next three months will be propaganda from all sides.

(62,270 posts)Back then I doubt that targeting cameras were nearly as good as they are now. Even the high quality video that they release under FOIA is apparently reduced in quality by several orders of magnitude as to not give away capability.
I somewhat trust the news that will be announced for one reason: private satellite companies will undeniably take pictures of the supposed destruction zones, and if it doesn't match up with what the US says, there will be questions asked. Expect decent quality pictures of factories before and after in the morning, detailed launch numbers, detailed confirmed explosion numbers, whole nine yards.
It would not surprise me if if it turns out that the Syrians shot down one or two of the missiles.

(2,412 posts)We have heard a lot about this war from the generals on TV and lots of talk about military hardware. Beautiful fireworks in the night sky. But I would like to hear from the women in Damascus whose homes and families have been destroyed. This is not a game.

(4,006 posts)We had the wherewithal to send attack planes and missiles (with NATO help) within say 24-36 hours after the chemical attack. Now, days later (see above evacuation quote) Putin took his weapons and staff into hiding as did the Syrians.
After seeing this early Saturday a.m. TV videos, it's apparent the upward shooting missile tracks were Russian made surface to air missiles. But, I noted many ground level explosions (big ones at that) that proves many NATO missiles and/or smart bombs did blow up a lot of empty buildings and maybe chemical weapons assembly points.
However, we have some pretty sophisticated tracking systems that show where all the removed airplanes, people, etc. went even from days before. One can bet that Trump ordered our strike forces to avoid killing any Russians, Russian equipment, etc. or Pootie-Poot would get real mad.....and likely release the hooker pee-pee tapes!
