Cruz Dem challenger slams Time piece praising Trump

Rep. Beto ORourke (D-Texas), who is running to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), tore into the senator for praising President Trump in a piece for Time magazines list of the 100 most influential people.
Just read Time Magazines Most Influential People article for Donald Trump, ORourke wrote Friday in a Medium post.
In it, [Cruz] refers to the man who attacked his family and the administration that has undermined so much of the decency and dignity of public life as great fun to watch, he said. I dont think that comment represents Texas.
The Democrat ripped Cruz for his comments praising Trump throughout the piece, pointing out the different policies the president has promoted or statements that Trump has made that ORourke doesn't believe were great fun to watch.

Just read Time Magazines Most Influential People article for Donald Trump. The junior senator from Texas, Ted Cruz, is the author. In it, he refers to the man who attacked his family and the administration that has undermined so much of the decency and dignity of public life as great fun to watch.
I dont think that comment represents Texas.
Because its not been great fun to watch President Trump refuse to condemn the racist and dangerous behavior of Klansmen and white nationalists marching with torches in the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia. Nor was it a laughing matter when he insulted women, attacked a Mexican American judge based on his ethnicity, threatened the rights of LGBTQ Americans, and called the press the enemy of the people.
It hasnt been fun for millions of Americans who find that seeing a doctor or fulfilling a prescription is increasingly out of reach. Protections for those with pre-existing conditions are threatened. Medicaid and Medicare are targeted for drastic cuts. And our state, which leads the nation in the rate of uninsured, sees a million more lose coverage.
Not fun for working Texans to see corporations and the wealthiest receive another massive tax cut, one that comes at the expense of their families and $2 trillion to the debt.
I dont think the 200,000 Texas Dreamers contributing to our communities today who are now threatened with deportation and face the real possibility of being sent to a country they dont know, where they dont speak the language, are enjoying this presidency.
And not one teacher that Ive met with in my travels to more than 240 counties has told me that theyre entertained by watching as public education is undermined by Betsy DeVos who wants to turn our tax dollars into vouchers for private schools.
The farmers in Dawson and Tulia dont see a trade war with China or the threatened withdrawal from NAFTA as a good idea. They know its not great fun but rather a direct threat to family farms and ranches and the entire economy of Texas.
As he stoops to bow to President Trump in the pages of Time, Ted Cruz reminds us that we can do much better. That with the right leadership in Texas we can lead this country past the divisiveness, the meanness, the paranoia and the smallness. Its our drive to focus on the big, aspirational goals of Texas and this country the ability for everyone to live to their full potential in the jobs they hold, the education they receive, the healthcare that they can count on, the voting rights they can exercise that will distinguish us.
Thanks,
Beto

(5,914 posts)As a straight guy, maybe I shouldn't weigh in on this. Cruz looks like a creepy, greasy, older televangelist. Beto looks like a young bro that you might invite over for a beer and maybe play a few rounds of HORSE using the driveway basketball hoop.

(56,829 posts)Watching this race from 1,500 to 2,000 miles away in New England, it looks to me like O'Rourke has been out working his tail off going all over the state and meeting with people.
Looking at the numbers, Cruz won by 16 points in 2016 when his opponent only had raised $150,000. Obama lost Texas by 16 points as well.
In 2016, Trump won Texas by a little under 10 points, a 6 point shift towards the Democrats.
Since then, Democrats have managed to flip seats, or come close to flipping seats, and picking up 15-20 O
In 2018, O'Rourke has raised several million dollars so far, so has money to run GOTV operations and have a media campaign as well. With Cruz being rather unpopular overall, I think O'Rourke has a real shot at it. And, even if he loses by 1,2 or 3 points in the end, he's making the Koch Brothers, Mercers and others likely spending bigly money on a race that should be safely Republican.

(51,642 posts)They played his speech from the primaries on MSNBC earlier when they were covering the Time story. He went on and on about how horrible the moron is. Apparently he wasn't too amused back then.
I hope other Dems who run hit back with the key points that Beto made. Stay away from guns and abortion, use health care, the tax scam, and education as the issues to focus on.
