Suicidal man was ready to jump. So 13 truckers parked under the bridge, Michigan cops say
Source: Miami Herald
Law enforcement and truckers in Michigan teamed up to save the life of a suicidal man. Police first heard of a man standing on a bridge that goes over a Detroit freeway at about 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Fox2. So officers quickly put a plan in action to stop him from doing it. Lt. Mike Shaw, a Michigan State Police spokesman, told The Detroit News that his department blocked traffic on Interstate 696 and then asked truckers who had been stopped to head for the overpass. Thirteen different trucks arrived at the scene and parked under the bridge to shorten the fall if the suicidal man decided to jump, police say. The man decided to willingly leave the bridge and police took him to a nearby hospital for evaluation, according to Fox2. 3. They don't call truck drivers "Knights of the Road" for nothing!
And definitely good common sense on the part of the cops as well!

4. Sometimes...
...all it takes is knowing that someone cares. It must have been life changing for man to see one by one the trucks lining up in both direction for the sole purpose of showing how important his life is.

9. Yeah! That was really good thinking - asking the truckers to step up
and use their trucks to shorten the would-be jumper's fall. VERY creative! And even just the gesture of doing so helped diffuse a potentially tragic situation.

11. I wonder if special nets for jumpers could be built in and deployed
in places like bridges and overpasses?

13. Golden Gate, some others have them.
Determined jumpers can get past them, for one thing. Like most stuff - it's gotta have a whole program to go with it, and there ain't enough to do it everyplace. The Golden Gate has a suicide patrol...

14. Thank you for that information. I've seen gates on bridges, even old ones.
But I don't remember ever seeing a net system or patrols.
So sad. ![]() |

17. I-75 thru Macon Ga has fences on all overpass bridges. But it wasnt for suicides.
Too many instances of idiot criminals throwing shit off the bridges onto cars. 20-30 yrs ago they just started putting up fencing
