A U.S. Navy veteran who reportedly told an Indian software engineer to “get out of my country” before shooting him dead and wounding two others in a bar in Kansas last year has been sentenced to life in prison, the local prosecutor said.

Under the sentence, Adam Purinton, 52, who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in March, will not be eligible for parole for 50 years, District Attorney Steve Howe said in a statement on Friday.

Johnson County District Court Judge Charles Droege also sentenced Purinton to an additional 165 months on each of two other charges stemming from the wounding of two other men, Howe said.

The February 2017 murder of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, in a bar in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe drew international attention as part of a wave of attacks across the country against blacks, Jews, Muslims and other groups following the 2016 election of U.S. President Donald Trump, who had made a crackdown on illegal immigration part of his platform.

Do they always accept guilty pleas in exchange for taking the death penalty off the table?

I seem to recall at least 1 case, federal perhaps, where the prosecutors didn't accept a guilty plea b/c they had a slam-dunk case and wanted the death penalty. I am curious if Kansas does the same, and under what circumstances.

I oppose the death penalty in principle, but I'm additionally disturbed by inconsistent pursuits of it.

an example of that is when we fix on a "poster child" for state sponsored murder. As soon as you consider anything not uniformly considered in every sentence of state sponsored murder it becomes demonstrably unequally applied.

Another side fact is that most folks understand that for some reason black males make up a disproportionate segment of prison and death row populations.

When the state kills a white inmate(poster child or not) it only guarantees that it will be easier to execute another inmate who is disproportionately likely to be a PoC and the next state sanctioned murder victim.

Life sentences USUALLY are a chickenshit form of the death penalty.

So I am against the death penalty for three reasons. One, it is unfairly applied. Two. It's murder and there are too many innocent inmates being executed or nearly executed. Three, everyone has the capability to be redeemed and contribute to society.

I am against life sentences at least 75% of the time. Its also unequally applied. Its too often used as a purely an alternative to a death penalty and is is unfairly more likely to be given to black males.

I am against three strike laws and mandated minimum sentencing.

All that crap gives no offender any incentive to straighten up and fly right.

I am totally outraged that there are prisons and jails in the country run and sometimes owned by private companies. I am for job training and education for offenders.

Our nation imprisons and punishes in the league of China and Pakistan. With absolutely no benefits to the crime rate. Its screwed up top to bottom. And HUGELY expensive.





And fuck the policy of hiring contractors/mercenaries fight in our wars.
