Gov. Kay Ivey on gay accusations: 'It's false. It's wrong'

A little more than 12 hours after a state legislator suggested she was gay, Gov. Kay Ivey again issued a strong denial on Wednesday morning.

"There's absolutely no truth to it," Ivey said. "It's false. It's wrong."

State Rep. Patricia Todd, D-Birmingham, and the state's only openly gay lawmaker, rattled Alabama's political landscape when she posted on Twitter and Facebook that "someone needs to out (Ivey) already...I have heard for years that she is gay."

Todd also mentioned a "girlfriend" who moved out of the house when Ivey became governor in April 2017. "I am sick of closeted elected officials," Todd posted on Tuesday.

You accuse people of crimes.

There have been many such intimations, because I am a male and I am openly living with a woman and her two children, both of whom people have noted kind of look like me.

I have been accused of having a relationship with this woman which could have a sexual component.

Well, I talked it over with my family and I decided to come out about it. I am a heterosexual. The accusations are all true. I can't help it. I was born this way. Even though I am a man, I have always been attracted to women.

My family has been understanding and supportive, and there seems to have been no repercussions at my job. In fact, I have recently learned that some of my colleagues are heterosexuals, and living openly as such.

I finally feel free to be who I am.

Sexuality is NOT something you accuse someone of. You accuse people of CRIMES. But you just won't even attempt to understand that and use some weak lame privileged analogy.

2. This all got started by one of Kay Ivey's Republican opponents...

who wondered why Gov. Ivey was funneling money to an LGBQT organization through a state agency.

Ivey then responded it wasn't her, and the state had stopped funding and the organization was being audited now!

Patricia Todd had recently resigned from the state legislature after ethics "modifications" seemingly targeted at Democrats forced her to choose between her career as a consultant/lobbyist (effectively banned from serving) or her position as a lower-paid public servant during the prime earning years of her life.

Being the first openly gay legislator elected in Alabama, Rep. Todd had warned about the hypocrisy of politicians saying and voting one way, and living quite another way in private.

Roy Moore demonstrated the power of the mere allegation of personal hypocrisy branding a candidate.

There are a lot of people who'd like to take the Republican governor down a peg or two right now.

This is Alabama. Roy Moore was just kicked off the Supreme Court for telling judges they didn't have to marry gays. Then he was nominated as the Republican US Senate candidate.
