A demented social club’: Poachers slaughtered hundreds of animals in Pacific Northwest for ‘the thrill,’ police say

It started when state officials wanted answers about the headless deer turning up in the Oregon wilderness east of Mount Hood.

“Nearly every year, it seems we have deer showing up minus their heads at the end of seasons,” Craig Gunderson, a senior trooper with the Oregon State Patrol, recently explained to the Seattle Times. Authorities believed the mutilated animals might be the work of poachers, so in November 2016 they fixed motion-triggered cameras in the national forest near The Dalles, Ore., smack on the Washington state line.

The footage troopers caught would prove to be the first clue to uncovering what officials now say was a loosely-linked poaching ring responsible for the illegal brutal slaughter of hundreds of animals in Washington and Oregon. The sheer size of the animal body count involved has shocked wildlife officials, in part because of the wantonness driving the rampant killing.

“It was kind of a demented social club,” an Oregon official told the Times.

“I consider it a killing spree,” a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife chief told Fox 12. “I’m completely disgusted.”

Smear their clothing with the maggot infested remains of those Elk heads and then drop them off by helicopter in the middle of grizzly bear country with nothing more than a Swiss Army knife.

They deserve nothing better.

Letting them off lightly. There has to be harsher consequences for this sort of behavior.

These are probably the same individuals who whine about predators who eat those animals.

And on second thought, maybe these are militiamen types using the wildlife to satiate their desire to harm.

People have been screaming about how there are "no animals to hunt" since the wolves were reintroduced to Idaho.

Well...a big part of the lack of game is the legalization of hunting from ATVs. Before I went off to the Army you DID NOT hunt from motorized vehicles in the state of Idaho. You had to park outside the hunting ground, walk in, do your hunting, and pack your game out of the forest. Now you can shoot at animals from atop your ATV, and harvest numbers are significantly down...which, of course, has nothing to do with the ungulates hearing a sudden increase in ATV activity in the woods and leaving until hunting season ends.

They are cruel, soulless, sadistic psychopaths.

If they can do this to animals, they have no compassion for any living creature or person.

The dumb fucks still had their Facebook profiles up when the story appeared in the papers up here. Maybe they still do.

I bet they walk away from this with their gun rights intact. Hell, forest companies will probably hire them to kill bears in the spring.

Elk, moose and other herbivores who eat a lot of plants, yes. But bears (and wolves) are free help for the business.

they're starving, it's one of the quickest calorie sources they can get to.

but, as this occurs on private forest land, those trees are crops. the bears are killed because they damage crops. the state allows it, and hunters are contracted to kill the bears.

a decade or so ago, a paid hunter had his arm chewed off by a bear on the Olympic peninsula.
