Communist-run Cuba to recognize private property in new constitution
Source: Reuters
HAVANA (Reuters) - Communist-run Cuba will officially recognize private property, something it has long rejected as a vestige of capitalism, under a new constitution that also creates the position of prime minister alongside the president, state media reported on Saturday.
Cubas current Soviet-era constitution only recognizes state, cooperative, farmer, personal and joint venture property.
But former President Raul Castros market reforms, aimed at trying to boost the economy and make Cuban socialism more sustainable, have prompted hundreds of thousands of Cubans to join the ranks of the islands self-employed since 2010, in new privately-owned businesses ranging from restaurants to beauty salons.
Ruling Communist Party newspaper Granma published a summary of the new constitution on Saturday, saying a draft it had seen included 224 articles, up from 137 previously.

Dont get me wrong, I support normalization of relations with Cuba. But that is a shit hole government that oppresses its citizens worse than any other in the New World.

(389 posts)Do Cubans communicate online? Yes. I skype and Facebook with my friends and relatives every day.
Maybe go there and see for yourself... lots and lots of lies and propaganda heaped miles high can be fully debunked by seeing for yourself.

(11,949 posts)I ask once again, could we be having this online discussion if you were I Cuba? If so, please let me know. I will apologize for my statements about Cuba.
And if I were a Cuban and Published either in the press or online something negative about the government would I get a visit from the police? Or some other entity that might as well be the police?
If not and that is totally allowable with Cuba please let me know, and I will apologize.
If neither of those things are possible, then Cuba is a police state.

(389 posts)Ill post here next time Im there.
There is a wide range of political discussion in Cuba, and opposition parties are present along with their platform communications.
I dont want or need any apology. Just would like the Soviet era-like US knee jerking to stop. Normalization with Cuba would help with this phenomenon.
Also, a good measure as to if theres a police state or not is prison population.
The US stands at #1 in total numbers and percentage of total population.

(11,949 posts)But lets stop playing games. If you say or publish something the Cuban government does not like youll get a visit from the police. If you publicly advocate for change in government you will get a visit from the police. Lots of countries are like this. No need to pretend that Cuba is somehow different. It like all those other countries is a police state.
If you want to start a post about the problems with the US I will probably agree with many of them. But in this country I can say whatever the hell I want and that counts for a lot. And I can work like hell to elect a government to replace the one we have now.
We should have never put the embargo on Cuba. Had we not they would have thrown off the one family banana republic in the name of socialism that they have years ago.

(389 posts)As I said, theres a wide range of politics in Cuba, including other parties (aka: opposition parties).
Thing is, Cubans overwhelmingly support their style of socialism. Even the annual CIA report admits this. For example That means if a candidate wants to run for elected office on a privatization of the health care system platform they stand zero chance of being nominated let alone winning.
You should go, the youd realize that youre not informed at all on this topic.
Not sure why anyone would insist on something they dont know about.
