U.S. says farmers could get cash aid by October but will not be made whole

Source: Reuters

Hugh Bronstein

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - U.S. farmers could receive cash payments from a planned $12 billion aid package as soon as late September, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue told Reuters on Saturday, warning that the program will not make tariff-hit farmers whole.

Perdue said in an interview on the sidelines of the G20 meeting of agriculture ministers in Buenos Aires that the plan would include between $7 billion and $8 billion in direct cash relief.

U.S. growers are expected to take an $11 billion hit due to retaliatory tariffs after Washington placed duties on Chinese goods. “Obviously this is not going to make farmers whole,” Perdue said.

The program includes cash for farmers of soybeans, sorghum, corn, wheat, cotton, dairy and hogs. It offers government purchases of fruits, nuts, rice, legumes, beef, pork and milk for distribution to food banks and nutrition programs. And it promises a trade promotion program to develop new markets.

The manufacturer I work for was hit by higher tariffs than agriculture, yet we don’t see one thin dime from DC.

I’d pull all subsidies from farmers...ALL of them. Then it’s at least somewhat fairer.

Meant to stave off starvation and using it to buy votes without the consent of Congress should be challenged in court IMO.

and consumers will pay Trump's tariffs and then get the bill for helping the farmers. Of course, the consumers who lose jobs because of the high cost of steel and aluminum won't have to pay more taxes and they sure won't be made whole either.

a raise in our Social Security checks. There's a shit-load more of us than there are small farmers. You want votes? I still wouldn't vote for you, no matter how much you increased our payments Mean Mr. Mustard. I'm sure you'd get a few more votes for the consideration from someone though.

I never thought I'd see Republicans become welfare queens. What next, sucking up to the Russians?

...how did this pass? Who voted on this "relief act"? Same as the tariffs themselves.

I seem to recall 8 years of "The president can't just act on his own!!!" and "Congress needs to act before the president can do anything!!!" as the excu......er "reason" that we couldn't do many things people said we wanted to do but the President couldn't act alone.

And since the other thing we heard was "Without 60 votes in the senate nothing can get done or passed!!!"

So which of these things were completely false?

Or maybe neither were false but I'm missing some mechanism by which these things can be done.

That all the farmers - family farms and corporate - will refuse these payments because it reeks of welfare and socialism. Their president said tariffs work and they stand by him, and won’t accept handouts.
