Democrats Announce New Red to Blue Women Candidates
Source: Roll Call
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee named four women candidates to its Red to Blue program Wednesday.
* Kara Eastman is challenging Rep. Don Bacon in Nebraskas 2nd District. Eastman, who supports single-payer health care, beat former Rep. Brad Ashford in the Democratic primary in May. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race Tilt Republican.
* Lucy McBath is running in Georgias 6th District against Rep. Karen Handel, who won her race in a much-watched special election last year. McBath, a gun control activist, won her runoff primary last week and was a spokeswoman for Everytown for Gun Safety. The only African-American and woman in the race, her son Jordan Davis was killed in 2012 by a white man who was annoyed by loud music playing from the car Davis sat in. Inside Elections rates the race as Likely Republican.
* M.J. Hegar is challenging Rep. John Carter in Texas 31st District. Hegar gained national prominence when her ad chronicling experiences in the U.S. Air Force went viral. Hegar outraised Carter in the most recent fundraising quarter but the race is still rated Solid Republican.
* Dana Balter is running against Rep. John Katko in New Yorks 24th District. The District voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 but the race is rated Likely Republican.
In the case of both Eastman and Balter, the announcement seems an admission that the DCCC might have gotten initial backings wrong.
