Poll: GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter up by 8 points despite indictment
Source: The Hill
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) holds an 8-point lead over his Democratic opponent despite being indicted on charges of misusing campaign funds, according to a new poll.
A Survey USA poll published Monday found that among likely voters in Californias 50th District who were surveyed, 47 percent plan to vote for Hunter, compared to 39 percent who favor Democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar, if they are the only two candidates on the ballot. President Trump won the district by 15 points in 2016.
Among Republicans, 77 percent of likely voters said that despite his indictment, they would vote for Hunter if the election was held today, the poll found.
Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted last week after being charged with misusing at least $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses.

(11,521 posts)Yeah, I get that this is a highly repub district, but you'd think they'd reconsider voting for a criminal. I suppose it needs to come out that Hunter preyed on teenage girls before gopers will start thinking about abandoning their candidate.

(17,390 posts)For nearly 40 years, voters in eastern San Diego County have picked a Republican named Duncan Hunter to be their representative in Congress. Duncan Lee Hunter came first, and then his son and current Congressman Duncan Duane Hunter.
Could 2018 be the year they change course and go with 29-year-old Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Palestinian Mexican American who spent part of his childhood in the Gaza Strip?
* * *
Campa-Najjar often tells voters he was raised mainly in the San Diego suburbs by a single Mexican American mother who worked as a receptionist at a doctors office. He recalls seeing her cry at the edge of her bed, stacking bills on top of one another, prioritizing which to pay and which to ignore.
She was playing the saddest game of solitaire, said Campa-Najjar, whose Palestinian father left the family when he was 8.

(21,646 posts)The 50th district is based in San Diego County. It includes suburban and outlying areas of the county, including Fallbrook, San Marcos, Valley Center, Ramona, Escondido, Santee, Lakeside, parts of El Cajon and mountain and desert areas stretching east to the Imperial County line. It extends slightly into southwestern Riverside County in the Temecula area.

They'll say or do anything to keep the House. I assume a Republican would have to be dead or locked up to not get their vote.

SAN DIEGO Ammar Campa-Najjar is the son of an Arab father and a Mexican-American mother. His campaign for Congress has been embraced by Democratic activists across the nation. He is an advocate of tough environmental measures, including a permanent moratorium on offshore drilling, and legal protections for immigrants who were brought into this nation as children.
At 29, he has never run for office and is barely known in this suburban San Diego district near Camp Pendleton. But Mr. Campa-Najjar abruptly emerged Wednesday as a decidedly credible candidate to represent this solidly Republican enclave in a Democratic state, after the incumbent, Representative Duncan Hunter, a Republican, was indicted with his wife Tuesday on charges of using $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses.
The indictment came on the same day that President Trumps former campaign chairman was found guilty of defrauding the federal government and his longtime personal lawyer pleaded guilty to campaign finance crimes, which he said he committed at the direction of Mr. Trump.
Mr. Campa-Najjars campaign had been something of a stepchild in a state that had been at the forefront of the Democratic battle to win control of Congress, attracting little attention. (There were other mouths to feed, he said of the partys California priorities.)

(47,578 posts)I have to wonder about the accuracy of some of these polls though or perhaps the people polled don't really follow the news that closely and just say "yes" to anything "republican". Maybe they think poor Duncan and his wife were set up. Oh I give up, these people are hopeless.
