Tropical storm Gordon takes aim at Gulf Coast

Source: MSN

A system moving quickly toward the central U.S. Gulf Coast become a tropical storm Monday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system, now named Gordon, was about 20 miles west of Key Largo in the Florida Keys. Maximum sustained winds have been clocked at 45 mph and the system is moving west-northwest at 17 mph.

A storm surge watch has been issued from the Mississippi-Alabama border westward to the Mouth of the Mississippi River, the NHC said.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for portions of the central Gulf Coast from the Alabama-Florida line westward to nearly Morgan City, Louisiana.

but much can change once it moves into the Gulf.

When I stepped out on the deck this morning ( we are 90 miles north-west of Pensacola) the wind already had that Gulf storm feel.

...is actually the system which is expected to steer Gordon. It's strong, which is why they aren't expecting the track to change much. Gordon itself will be here (around NOLA) tomorrow (Tuesday) evening. I will probably go in to work tomorrow morning but I expect we will end up closing shop mid-day to get ready.

Have a friend leaving Beaumont Tx. to arrive in Mobile area friday evening.

If he goes north and cuts across La and Miss. to 84 in ala. he will run right into it on Thursday/Friday, sez the track.

If he stays on 10 it will have passed by Thursday night. But....road conditions.

What to do, what to do....

I'd advise your friend to watch the traffic but if there are no major advisories, take I-10 -- including the I-12 shortcut past NOLA -- right across the Coast. Even if something does happen to I-10 they will either have it corrected in half a day or it will be national news that they can't.

I had not heard about the 1-12 shortcut past NOLA...I will mention it to him. He also drives with a SIRI enabled car.
