New Yorker disinvites Bannon from festival following backlash
Source: The Hill
The New Yorker on Monday disinvited former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon from the magazine's fall festival next month following outcry over his inclusion in the event.
Bannon's scheduled appearance at the festival sparked significant backlash Monday as a number of attendees, including Jim Carrey and John Mulaney, said they were withdrawing from the event.
I don't want well-meaning readers and staff members to think that I've ignored their concerns," New Yorker editor David Remnick wrote in a note on Monday that was shared to the magazine's Twitter account.
"I've thought this through and talked to colleagues and I've reconsidered. I've changed my mind."
Remnick said that he would not interview Bannon on stage during the event as previously planned, but said that "if the opportunity presents itself" in the future he would plan to interview the former Breitbart News executive "in a more traditionally journalistic setting."

(23,314 posts)it was a good idea in the first place? Stop giving that racist POS a platform! Ari Melber went down a couple of pegs in my estimation when he interviewed that asshole. Brannon wouldnt be relevant if people ignored his sorry ass.

(9,988 posts)Im a subscriber, and I was considering cancelling over this. Im happy to know that Bannon has been disinvited. The media does not need to air his vile thoughts and plots for his racial/religious war. And I agree with your comment about Ari Melber. I often watch his show but I refused to tune in for that interview, and Ive watched less of him since then because the idea that he was giving Bannon a national platform was so irritating. Melberand all of MSNBCshould not give voice to white supremacist, conspiracy-generating people who believe that truth is for the little people.

(6,262 posts)I was horrified to learn they had invited him. An interview in the mag is one thing -- giving such a loud presence in person to anyone who is actively trying to destroy everything we honor is beyond reprehensible -- unless you are The National Enquirer. And heretofore my beloved New Yorker has not stooped to that.
I can't wait until we jettison Trump and his ilk so we can return to those great long New Yorker articles about lizards, or cycads, or orchids with political essays not consuming the bulk of the issue.

(3,479 posts)Steve Bannon is a white supremacist. He codes his language better, but he's no different than David Duke. Inviting him to any event normalizes white power types.

(13,598 posts)The fact that they would consider such an invitation in the first place is outrageous. I guess that's what the media has become today. Just think of that fawning, sympathetic piece about "handsome" Spencer in the NYT and similar work on NPR. The next logical step is a series of hagiographies about "strong, dashing leaders of the past" like Mussolini and Hitler.

(12,654 posts)A liberal organization "recognized him" in terms of legitimate discourse, whether or not he gets disinvited because they realized by having him on, they were legitimizing Nazis and white supremacists.

(26,621 posts)While American newpapers and magazines of the 30's downplayed or ignored Hitler (some even flattered him) the New Yorker, along with Vanity Fair, were relentless in their condemnation of fascism.
Maybe the thought was their credibility would allow them to expose Bannon for what he is. I don't know, but with their history and their fine, honest and decent reporting, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this.
