Paraguay moves Israel embassy back out of Jerusalem

Source: Associated Press

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) — Paraguay announced Wednesday it would immediately move its embassy in Israel out of Jerusalem and back to Tel Aviv, less than four months after opening the new mission.

The move presents an embarrassing diplomatic setback for Israel, which had hoped to build on the momentum started by the U.S., Guatemala and Paraguay, which all moved their embassies to Jerusalem in May. In response to Paraguay's decision, Israel said it was shuttering its embassy there, warning that ties between the countries would be "strained" by the decision.

. . .

New Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez had opposed the switch even before taking office on Aug. 15.

"One of the most complex components of the conflict (between Israel and the Palestinians) is the status of Jerusalem," Castiglioni said, and Paraguay believes it should be negotiated between the parties involved — a position still held by most nations.

"...unilateral, visceral and without justification." Much like Trump's decision.

3. So true! Paraguay under dictator Alfredo Stroessner welcomed SS officer, Dr. Josef Mengele.

Wikipedia:

Josef Mengele (German: [ˈmɛŋələ]; 16 March 1911 – 7 February 1979) was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and physician in Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. He performed deadly human experiments on prisoners and was a member of the team of doctors who selected victims to be killed in the gas chambers. Arrivals deemed able to work were admitted into the camp, and those deemed unfit for labor were immediately killed in the gas chambers. With Red Army troops sweeping through Poland, Mengele was transferred 280 kilometres (170 mi) from Auschwitz to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp on 17 January 1945, just 10 days before the arrival of the Soviet forces at Auschwitz. After the war, he fled to South America where he evaded capture for the rest of his life.

Stroessner ruled, committing genocide against native citizens, using survivors as slaves, over 35 years, with complete U.S. government support, a fact not usually mentioned in US history books, of course. He hosted Mengele and other Nazis. Thank you.

5. To say nothing of the Highway 78 corridor between Carlsbad and Escondido.

Up to 10,000 Nazis were settled there by way of Operation Paperclip. Many were specialists in psy ops and war crimes, and were brought over precisely for their expertise; lots of former SS.

To this day, some antique stores in Escondidio look like Third Reich museums. Their descendants today tend to be very Republican, and rather proud of their parents'/grandparents' past - as some will gladly tell you.

In any case, Bibi has become quite the 'Nazi' himself. The ongoing and violent occupation, the systematic flouting of UN resolutions and international law, the torture, the use of WMD against civilians, the ethnic cleansing.

I'm glad Benítez rescinded Cartes' move - which mas mostly intended to curry favor with Cheeto anyway.

7. Have heard of the region in California where the Nazi maniacs relocated after the war.

There would have been an enormous reaction had more US Americans known about that strange, totally questionable maneuver.

The original transplants would have been so thrilled to see the Carlsbad and Escondido police cruising through the streets these days:

How odd is it for them to have located them to be so close to the San Diego Naval Base and Camp Pendleton?

Not to mention the air bases... and Rohr Aircraft.

Were the planners of this scheme all drunk, or does this represent a view of a totally different universe occupying the same space? This all just doesn't sound right, does it? Yikes.

Hope someone who just learned about it will follow up with research.

Thanks for the reminder.

I lived in south Orange County for several years, and knew a few of these people.

They almost seem to giddy to tell you all about their Nazi grandfather/uncle, or whatnot.

South America certainly had their share too (Pinochet himself was trained in Nazi Germany, and Chile's largest fim, Cencosud, is run by Nazi descendants).

That said, Benítez, Paraguay's new president, did the right thing. I'd stay clear of Paraguayan embassies for the time being though.

10. Pinochet always has seemed fascist, now I know why! Good grief.

Even his silly costumes!

The kidnappings, huge numbers of political prisoners in detention camps, the shockingly brutal tortures, the murders, the police state, etc.?

Had never heard of peep about his training. There were also so many Nazis who settled in his country after the war, including the child predator/torturer/murderer at his mountain kingdom, Colonia Dignidad (wry joke?) in Chile, Paul Schaeffer, who did the custom torturing and murders for Pinochet, himself a former Nazi.

You really do move us along the road toward a far better grasp, sandensea. This information was a real boost, would have taken far longer trying to look for it, instead.

The more one can learn about that Operation, the more astonishing it all becomes. So unbelievably strange, but only to those who haven't learned about it, yet. It starts looking so much clearer from here. The illusion has been vast.

11. What a long way Chile has come from those dark days - both institutionally and economically

Piñera, while a professed admirer of Pinochet, has governed far more closely to the precedent set by the Concertación era between 1990 and 2010 - the Socialist-Christian Democrat alliance that daccomplished so much for Chile.

Paraguay's new president, Benítez, could end up being a conservative in that same mold: the moderate, preagmatic kind that refuses to abide by atrocities (such as Israel's illegal occupation and ethnic cleansing). We'll see.

His neighbor to the south, Macri, has meanwhile painted himself into a corner and is quickly running out of options. Now he's planning to beg Trump personally for $10 billion, can you believe it?

Money they'll use to offshore even more capital.

Qué será.

while the Republicans plot and scheme to destroy social security and medicare, etc.

Then that money follows Macri and company's IMF money into the black hole and appears in Panama-like environs.

Mind-boggling.

Is Macri's Treasury Minister Nicolas Dujovne still here, have you heard, or did he return home during the week?

Who's going to put the bite on Trump? Trump will undoubtedly adore the chance to hand out more money for oligarchs. It would make him feel powerful, and that's what he craves.

Argentine markets and the peso have recovered a little on these news; but without any changes to currency regulations (which are allowing him and all his supporters to hot-foot billions of out the country every month), how long will that last them?

Two months? Maybe three?

Besides, I don't think Mnuchin is on board.

Now, if Macri expedited approval of that Trump Tower Buenos Aires (remember that?) - then he'd be in business.

9. U.S. VP Pence pressures Paraguay over Jerusalem embassy move

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence urged Paraguay’s new president to stick to his predecessor’s decision to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, Pence’s office said on Thursday after Asuncion announced plans to shift the diplomatic mission back to Tel Aviv.

Paraguay on Wednesday dealt a blow to Israeli’s quest for recognition of Jerusalem as its capital, which appeared to have gained some traction this year when the United States, followed by Guatemala and Paraguay, relocated embassies there.

Most countries do not recognise Israeli sovereignty over the entire city.

Pence, who played a main role in President Donald Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, spoke on Wednesday to Paraguayan President Mario Abdo, who was elected on Aug. 15.
