Obama: Romney, GOP offering only well-worn ideas

Source: Austin American-Statesman

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — President Barack Obama accused Mitt Romney and Republicans on Saturday of offering outdated ideas that are ill-suited to voters during the first stop on a march to the Democratic convention. Romney, fresh from his GOP convention, vowed to bring more jobs to the country, bemoaning 23 million people out of work or underemployed.

"Despite all the challenges that we face in this new century, what they offered over those three days was, more often than not, an agenda that was better suited for the last century," Obama said in Urbandale, Iowa, on a sprawling 500-acre property that serves as a museum of farming history.

"It was a rerun. We'd seen it before. You might as well have watched it on a black-and-white TV," the president said.

"There was a lot of talk about hard truths and bold choices, but nobody ever actually bothered to tell you what they were," Obama said. "And when Gov. Romney had his chance to let you in on his secret, he did not offer a single new idea, just retreads of the same old policies that have been sticking it to the middle class for years."

URBANDALE | President Barack Obama on Saturday told Iowans who launched him in 2008 that he plans to offer “a better path forward” at this week’s Democratic National Convention than the “tired, trickle down” policies of Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Bolstering the middle class by protecting health-care options and assisting returning veterans, debt-strapped college students and struggling small businesses were among the themes Obama touched on during a 20-minute address to an estimated 10,000 supporters. He ended in time to keep a promise of wrapping up the campaign stop so Iowans could still watch the University of Iowa and Iowa State University football games.

Obama used his seventh visit to Iowa this year to deride Romney for failing to mention U.S. military involvement in Iraq or Afghanistan during his televised acceptance speech in Tampa. He also said his opponent failed to offer any specific details on how he planned to turn around the U.S. economy and create 12 million jobs. He said Republicans talked about hard truths and bold ideas, “but nobody bothered to tell you what they were.”

“Iowa, they have tried to sell us these tired, trickle-down, you’re-on-your-own policies before. They did not work, they’ve never worked. They won’t create jobs, they won’t cut our deficit, they will not strengthen our middle class. They are not a plan to move our country forward,” Obama said.
