China says it will retaliate after Trump imposes fresh tariffs
Source: Reuters
China said on Tuesday it has no choice but to retaliate against new U.S. trade tariffs, risking even stronger action from President Donald Trump in an escalation of the trade war between the worlds largest economies.
...
To protect its legitimate rights and interests and order in international free trade, China is left with no choice but to retaliate simultaneously, the commerce ministry said in a brief statement, without specifying what action it would take.
The United States insists on increasing tariffs, bringing new uncertainties to bilateral trade negotiations. China hopes the United States would recognise the negative consequences of its actions, and take convincing steps to correct its behaviour in a timely manner.

China is reviewing plans to send a delegation to Washington for fresh talks in light of the U.S. decision, the South China Morning Post reported on Tuesday, citing a government source in Beijing.

(10,418 posts)The United States can probably win a trade war. We simply have more buying power than the Chinese. I'm thinking what will happen here is that China will back off before this gets out of hand and throw Trump a bone in a way that minimizes their losses. Trump will take it claiming victory just so he can look good.
The economist Richard D Wolff has said that Trump creates a problem where there really wasn't a problem before. Then, after everyone has forgotten that the source of the problem is Trump's doing, he rides in like the Lone Ranger and claims to save the day. Not much is gained or lost aside from the dignity of our nation.

(49,001 posts)1) tRump has started trade wars on many fronts: China, Canada, Mexico, Europe, India. Plus he has announced the US is leaving the WTO!
The rest of the world is thus finding ways to trade around the USA by trading with each other.
2) China can withstand more pain than the US. There are many purchasers worldwide for Chinese products and some US imports can't be obtained anywhere else than China.
Ultimately the Chinese internal market will become bigger than the export market to the USA and the Chinese know this.
Chinese people are quite proud of their economic growth but will sacrifice some growth to gain leverage. They can grow beyond a trade war but most likely will simply wait tRump out (while growing). tRump is a temporary blip in the long run.

(128,935 posts)No we won't.
China has 1.4 billion people and their "middle class" is pretty much at or scheduled to encompass more than the entire population of the U.S. And the rural there can't afford and don't buy all this "stuff" that their own country makes but sells here to the U.S. Their "market" is basically the rest of the world including places like Japan and obviously Europe. The other huge and up-and-coming market is India, with a population just behind China's at 1.3 billion. Their "middle class" is a smaller fraction of the total when compared to China, but they are still significant just due to the country's huge population.
The U.S. is pretty much a breadbasket of the world due to the vast swaths of land available for growing grains and grazing cattle, but if we can't sell that stuff to someone else, then we're screwed. And since we pissed off Canada, why would they want our stuff (and the entire country's population is smaller than the population of California) even if we do try to sell to them? And I expect Mexico will continue to shift their trade towards countries in South America and elsewhere in this hemisphere (i.e., OAS members other than the U.S.).

(4,429 posts)I don't mind one bit (okay, that's not true - I do have some money in the market)
but good anyway! Make enough of a mess so that the midterms are - even more - in play.
I'm okay with this strategy.
