O'Rourke defends Cruz after protesters heckle senator at restaurant

Source: The Hill

Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) on Tuesday defended Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) after the senator and his wife were swarmed by protesters during dinner at a Washington, D.C., restaurant the night before.

"Not right that Senator Cruz and his wife Heidi were surrounded and forced to leave a restaurant last night because of protesters. The Cruz family should be treated with respect," O'Rourke tweeted.

O'Rourke is attempting to unseat Cruz in November's Senate election. A RealClearPolitics average of polls in the race shows Cruz with a 4.5 percentage point lead in the race.

Protesters approached Cruz and his wife and heckled him over his views of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who is under scrutiny after two women came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct.
"We believe survivors,” the crowd chanted, as shown on video posted on social media.

Cruz may be thinking..."sucker." Or he may be resentful of O'Rourke stealing Cruz's sympathetic day of headlines. I'm not so sure that being nice is a key characteristic of election winners. But it did take some of the attention from Cruz and direct it toward himself, which would be a savvy thing to do, politically. The last thing he wants is sympathy for Cruz among the voters.

Regardless of outcome I can imagine him as the keynote speaker at the 2020 National Convention.

Like Ann Richards. Barbara Jordan. Julian Castro.

I think he will win. I am hoping he pulls tickets along with him all over the State. There are some tight races that his presence at the top of the ticket can help flip.

IF all these people who show up and put up signs get to the polls and vote.

I personally ask every under 35 yr old person I meet "are you registered to vote?" If yes, then "Well you are going to vote in November, right?" I usually wear something identifiable as Democratic gear, so if I get a big smile and a "Yes" I feel pretty good about it.

Turning a state which consistently is in the 48th- 50th percentage in turnout into a true voting state is going to be hard but we are really trying! I think Democrats and leftleaning Independents have been depressed for so long because 'no candidates' that they gave up. Those who did vote, would vote for any third party over a Republican if we did not have a candidate for that office. I have done that myself. I also skipped every unopposed Republican. Now I have someone to vote for in all those spots

He also is kowtowing to Trump who defamed her. It would seem the natural thing to do was to suggest leaving to her, both to stand up and leave with his arm around her. It should be mentioned that this did not seem to be violent or with a threat of bodily harm - even as it was harrassment.

The way I envision this scenario, Cruz says "Whoops honey, let's get out of here. I'll go get the car and you stay at the table until I bring it up to the curb." Then he gets halfway to the door and can't get past the protesters, so he goes back to his wife. "Come on honey, it's not safe here. We're all leaving together. I'll walk you and the girls out."

Then he walks behind his wife and daughters to the door, like a big man.

In DC, Senators get preferential seating. They usually don't need to make reservations more than a day or two ahead of time, and sometimes not even that far.

Also, many restaurants will give them the best tables, and comp a good portion of their meals, including drinks.

Just one of the many perks of the job.

He ate for free at the restaurant his buddy owned. However after becoming mayor he insisted on paying because he felt it was unseemly for an elected official to accept free meals.

Restaurants can offer comps but it's up to officials to say "no".

These guys probably eat out at least 5 nights a week; and they don't eat at arby's. The gov't won't reimburse personal meals. And even for work related meals, they have a small per dium (though senators may have their own guidelines - I don't know).

So basically hundreds of dollars a week in meals. That's a big expense on a senators salary.

The temptation is certainly there. Are the ethics?

They will still run a story that said they reached out to beto's office for a response but heard nothing. It will be repeated over and over, no response from beto.

Even if it is called out, they will continue the lie. Eventually, they might add a "belated comment after multiple requests" to the story.

Many voters have no other source of news. They will never hear about the tweet or the timing.

Lies repeated often enough become truth. It's faux's motto.

To be entirely honest, I'm not sure Beto didn't actually shift his vote balance negatively by making this statement. Hopefully, he didn't, but we will really never know.

instead of going for the jugular and finishing the job, we liberals and progressives always find a way to comfort our enemies who suffered merely a paper cut from our attacks. We need to be going in and snapping their necks and giving them the (political) death they deserve. No mercy, and no compromise. Why should the Cruz family be treated with respect? I see no grounds for this conclusion. Democrats, liberals, progressives, PLEEZE put some steel in your backs, straighten your knees and quit trying to find a way to surrender and sing kumbayah with our mortal enemies. Make no mistake, a republican is your enemy, these are no longer merely political opponents.
