American Bar Association: Delay Kavanaugh until FBI investigates assault allegations

Washington (CNN)The American Bar Association is calling on the Senate Judiciary Committee to halt the consideration of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh until an FBI investigation is completed into the sexual assault allegations that have roiled his nomination.

In a strongly worded letter obtained by CNN Thursday, the organization said it is making the extraordinary request "because of the ABA's respect for the rule of law and due process under law," siding with concerns voiced by Senate Democrats since Christine Blasey Ford's decades-old allegations became public.

"The basic principles that underscore the Senate's constitutional duty of advice and consent on federal judicial nominees require nothing less than a careful examination of the accusations and facts by the FBI," said Robert Carlson, president of the organization, in a Thursday night letter addressed to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

"Each appointment to our nation's Highest Court (as with all others) is simply too important to rush to a vote," Carlson wrote. "Deciding to proceed without conducting additional investigation would not only have a lasting impact on the Senate's reputation, but it will also negatively affect the great trust necessary for the American people to have in the Supreme Court."

It doesn’t hurt to have the support, but I doubt any R senators have much respect for the ABA or put much stock in its opinions anyway, as it’s to the left (and therefore opposite of almost all R’s) on most important social and legal issues.

Possibly Not. All Lawyers who are worth their salt, have a membership in the ABA. Including Senators who are Lawyers by Practice. We will see and we only need THREE additional Nay's.

And Huge. Many U.S. Senators are also Lawyers including most if not all that sit on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and equally are Members of the ABA The ABA just threw the gauntlet and most Lawyers in the ABA worth their salt are members of the ABA and take an oath to follow the organizations' Ethical Standards.

We shall see. The GOLD STANDARD has been called by the ABA. HALT the Kavanaugh Nomination Process, NOW.

Coming out Against or Asking for a Halt for ANY SCOTUS Nomination. Not even Clarence Thomas.

This is groundbreaking.

If u lose your law license u cant practice. The SCOTUS seat would then be vacant again.

From practicing by his state?
Furthermore, if an investigation did happen & he was found guilty, would he be allowed to sit as a judge? Hopefully a Democratic controlled Congress would decide that he be impeached given the "good behavior" clause.

on your second question, yes, he could remain on the SC.

He could be impeached, that's the easy part, it's in the Senate where you would run into trouble, it takes 67 votes to convict and remove him, that means the Dems would need a supermajority in the Senate to assure a conviction and removal, and that just ain't going to happen.

tRump has done to this country in the short time he has been in the WH. Kavanaugh could bring down what is left of the country in a very short time. He would vote to give tRump and the gop anything they want. He is determined to get what they promised him, a SC seat. A lifetime job, where he can drink daily, assault women and not be touched. Entitled sob wants this appointment BADLY.
