Lawyer who fought to ban trans people from bathrooms will lead DOJ civil rights division

Source: LGBTQ Nation

By Alex Bollinger · Monday, October 22, 2018

An anti-gay lawyer was confirmed to lead the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.

In a 52-45 vote, the Senate confirmed Donald Trump’s nominee, Eric Dreiband.

He will now head up the Department of Justice’s efforts to fight racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination, even though he has spent his life defending discrimination.

Dreiband represented the University of North Carolina in a lawsuit against the school’s decision to enforce HB2, which restricted bathroom access for trans people and banned local governments from passing LGBTQ anti-discrimination ordinances.

she is the first one to come to mind. I had a mild case of the Naders after 2000, but it faded. This isn't fading - and I hope this haunts her for the rest of her life.

I pledge to do my part to make certain that her complicity and treachery isn't forgotten. The things she said, the LIES she told, the VENOM she spewed, the DIVISION she caused... it's all unforgivable.

about "..liberty and justice for all" will need to be eliminated. I'm sure the Republicans will be all over that, just like the part of the national anthem about "the land of the free".

Eric Dreiband

Eric Stefan Dreiband (born September 23, 1963) is an American lawyer. Currently a partner at Jones Day, he has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.

Education and career

Dreiband graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts and earned a Master of Theological Studies from the Harvard Divinity School. He earned his Juris Doctor from the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Upon graduating from law school, Dreiband served as a law clerk to Judge William Joseph Bauer of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Following his clerkship, Dreiband served in the Independent Counsel's office for the Whitewater controversy. After a stint in private practice, Dreiband served in the administration of George W. Bush as deputy administrator of the United States Department of Labor's wage and hour division from 2002 to 2003 and as general counsel of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 2003 to 2005. He again returned to private practice in 2005 and joined Jones Day in 2008, where he is currently a partner.

about how there will now be guys "waving their weenies in my daughter's face!!". I told him it is now his job to police every ladies' restroom he sees, and that he has to run in and make sure there is no one in there he doesn't approve of.

Most homophobes are straight people who hate gay people, not self-loathing gays.

This asshole will make it easier to attack the GLBT community while people twiddle their thumbs and make homophobic jokes about him being a "secret faggot". With someone like this in position, hate crimes statutes could come under attack and sexual orientation and gender identity get dropped all together. It could also lead to a "reinstitution" (or acceptance of) of the "gay panic" defense.

that get the evangelicals happy. They will point to this and say "See, he is doing good things for America. So what if he screwed around on his wife."

I don't recall seeing anyone from the LGBTQ community suck up to Trump a la Kanye West (SO embarrassing), so I guess y'all saw the dangers of a Trump presidency.

We just didn't campaign hard enough for Hillary.
