One dead at Marois Montreal victory rally shooting

Source: cbc.ca

Parti Québécois Leader Pauline Marois was abruptly rushed off stage mid-way through her victory speech after a shot was fired and a fire set behind the downtown Montreal venue where her supporters had gathered.

Montreal police said one person died in the shooting and a second person was injured and in critical condition.

Police took one person into custody, a man in his 50s who was allegedly involved in the events at the Metropolis concert hall.

The man entered the venue from the back just before midnight, police said.

Ugh.

I can count assassinations or attempts at same up here that I know of on one hand and be reasonably sure I've got them all, which makes stuff like this extra jarring.

According to reports, the suspect apparently shouted "the English are awakening"

And the media has been ratcheting up the rhetoric, hate and fear for the last few weeks about Quebec.

....I frequent a board that is very involved in Canadian politics and what I can tell you is that the party who won last night (and to whom this violence was directed at) reminds me of the groups who want to make English the official language of this country....except they want to do it for French. They are separatists whose leader once pulled a Nixon and all but admitted they had a Southern Strategy to win in the future.

One of the posters on this board I frequent, a pro separatist, keeps referring to a candidate named "Jean" as "John" because that's supposed to be an insult to have an Anglo name. It's straight out of the "Barack Hussein Obama" GOP playbook.

There's a lot of tension on both sides.
