Romney campaign tells Obama to 'rein in his supporters' on Nazi comments

Source: The Hill

Mitt Romney's campaign issued a statement Wednesday demanding Democratic officials "cease and desist from comparing those with whom they disagree to Nazis" after the chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party compared Gov. Nikki Haley (R-S.C.) to Adolf Hitler mistress Eva Braun.

"The latest offender is Dick Harpootlian, the South Carolina Democratic Party chairman, whose outrageous words I will not repeat," said former Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.) in a statement released by the Romney campaign. "In recent days, we’ve seen similarly disgraceful statements from a top Kansas Democratic delegate and from the chairman of the California Democratic Party.

"President Obama has called for civility in American politics. If his call is to be taken seriously, it’s time for the President to rein in those of his supporters and allies who are trivializing Nazism while also shamelessly trampling on the most basic rules of American political discourse.”

Harpootlian made the comments in reference to a Republican National Committee rapid-response center in the basement of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, N.C.

“She was down in the bunker à la Eva Braun,” he said.

OMFG: Mitt Romney’s New Black Leadership Council Chair: Allen West

Just when you think that politics has reached an epic high in absurdity, something happens that makes you realize that there is simply no limit to how monumentally deranged things can get.

Last month an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll was released that showed Mitt Romney receiving 0% of the African-American vote. So what does Romney do to address that historic rejection? He chooses wackadoodle congressman Allen West of Florida to chair his Black Leadership Council. Yes, that’s Allen West who has said…

I believe there’s about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party who are members of the Communist Party.

If Joseph Goebbels was around, he’d be very proud of the Democrat Party.

President Obama seems determined to punish and wipe out economic success in this country, leveling tax weapons of mass destruction on all taxpayers.

Barack Obama is undeserving of the title Commander-in-Chief.

{Obama} can take {his message} to Europe, you can take it to the bottom of the sea, you can take it to the North Pole, but get the hell out of the United States of America.

You {Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz} are the most vile, unprofessional, and despicable member of the US House of Representatives.

Mainstream media’s is no longer reporting the news, they are propagandizing [...] Goebbels is doing somersaults and back flips in his grave.

OK, so West is a paranoid, hateful, misogynist who is obsessed with Nazis and communists, but how does that affect his chairmanship of Romney’s Black Leadership Council? Well he is also a bitter opponent of the Congressional Black Caucus who he has disparaged as race-baiters. He diminishes the horrors of slavery by calling himself a runaway slave from the Democratic plantation. He has spoken out virulently against Muslims and immigrants and is hostile to multiculturalism.

It's not the Nazism that is trivial

It is the Republican party that is being compared to
something that is so stupifyingly unacceptable. When
you accept that propaganda is an acceptable means
to win an election you have obviously accepted the
tactics of the Nazi's - Didn't Tokyo Rose go to prison
for her role in spreading propaganda during WWII?

How is it acceptable to trick people into voting for you
by telling lies about your opposition?

How is it acceptable to try to win an election by limiting
the voting rights of those who support the opposition?

How much respect do you have for a group of elected
officials who choose to accept a salary and spend their
time (32 times) trying to recind a health care program
and do absolutely zilch to benefit the American people?

If the foo shits - wear it!!

Absolutely. It's an important distinction. They can be described as fascist fairly accurately, and an opportunity is created to explain the definition. Call someone a Nazi and the specific history and atrocities associated with German National Socialism are drawn into play. That leads to mere name-calling and the one using the Nazi label is likely to be accused of hyperbole and be discredited.

Fascism in America will not look like Nazism.

for power's sake alone", but that doesn't quite encapsulate the fact that it's a drive to acquire ALL power, absolute power, nor the fact that it will dress itself in anything and everything, use every political persona out there, any and all value systems, whatever, anything and everything used and abused and disposed of in service of the acquisition of more power.

I've seen those lists of the characteristics of fascism around, but I think we need more of a sound bit summary to give the general concept or motive behind all of those individual traits.

It should say something about how it's absolutely no-holds-barred total power acquisition that assumes whatever identity it finds useful to get more power.

"Our campaign will not be dictated to by fact deniers."

I know all about how "the first person to mention Hitler loses", but maybe if they didn't make it so damn easy we wouldn't do it.

BTW, here's' the full quote that is always being referenced in these stories.

Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along. Whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifist for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

Both of them have frequently made Nazi comparisions, see if Romney is willing to do what he demands of Obama with his own people. Who do you think has more influence Dick Harpootilian or Rush Limbaugh? Romney is pretty desperate if his campaign is reduced to becoming outraged over some comments by a guy named Dick Harpootilian who nobody has ever heard of.

It was the Philadelphia mayoralty election of 1971. Republican Thatcher Longstreth was running against "Democrat" Frank Rizzo (he switched to the Republicans shortly after the election), the corrupt Commissioner of Police.

In the one and only debate, Rizzo queried Longstreth as to why he had called Rizzo a few names (I don't recall exactly what, but it was something like oaf, buffoon, lout, etc etc.).

Longstreth didn't hesitate, but immediately said, "Well, if the shoe fits........."

It's important to read first-person accounts of the time before the nazis came into power. Many Germans were like frogs in a slow simmering pot of water. Certain groups and classes of people were demonized for a long time until the dam finally broke.

And we all know what happened next.

Is history repeating? I sure hope not, but I don't think we truly will know until it's too late.

They throw grandma off of a cliff. They talk about legitimate rape. They think that a woman should have to sacrifice her life to carry a pregnancy to term even if it will end up with the baby dead and the mother dead as well. They talk about people pulling themselves up by their bootstraps but then turn around and try to cut pell grants and student loans. And they are against the freedom to marry. Then they have the nerve to be offended by a couple of comments by rouge Democrats? Seriously they need to reign in their hate speech before they make comments about our accurate comments.
