Trump Calls French President Macron's Idea for a European Army 'Very Insulting'

Source: U.S. News & World Report/Reuters

Nov. 9, 2018, at 4:27 p.m.

WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday it was "very insulting" for French President Emmanuel Macro to suggest Europe should create its own army to protect itself from potential enemies, including the United States.

"Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the U.S. subsidizes greatly," Trump said on Twitter as he arrived in France to meet with Macron.

On Tuesday, Macron said Europe needed a real army to reduce reliance on the United States for defense. "We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America," Macron said on French radio, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Trump says Macron's "EU army" plan is "insulting"

On his way to Paris, President Trump tweeted his dissatisfaction with French President Emmanuel Macron's suggestion that Europe should build its own military defense against the U.S., China and Russia, calling the idea "very insulting" that Europe feels it needs protection from the U.S. instead of by the U.S.

The backstory: Macron is a proponent of "European sovereignty," meaning that Europe must have its own foreign and defense policy rather than relying on the U.S., Axios' Dave Lawler explains. Trump appears to be taking offense to Macron's characterization of the U.S. as one of the powers Europe must be wary of .

“It should be a very beautiful period of time, the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War I. We have many countries — the leadership from many countries will be there, especially since they heard the United States will be there. And we look forward to that,” Trump told reporters Friday before leaving the White House. “I’ve seen what they have planned, and I think it’s going to be something very, very special.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/trump-shifts-postelection-focus-to-armistice-commemoration/2018/11/09/b463a5b8-e44c-11e8-ba30-a7ded04d8fac_story.html?utm_term=.897544d53e3b

So... other world leaders are coming to this event only because U.S. President Orangehole McLittledick will be there. According to him, anyhow.

And there will be tanks and soldiers and stuff!

We need a military to protect ourselves from Trump. Everyone in the world should be wary of the U.S. while Trump is in office.

close ranks against us until we get rid of 45 and change the Senate.

It may take us years to recover, but they, the Europeans, are doing the right thing.

And we will have to find our own way to say, "Never again!" Getting rid of the EC would be a good start.

He sees what's happening, and knows what could happen. It's too late to try to get a collective military together at the 11th hour.

Interesting idea. But would it be that much different than those countries getting together as a coalition of armies?
