Late US Senator McCain Honored for Defending Russian Human Rights

Source: voanews.com

LONDON — U.S. Sen. John McCain was posthumously given the 2018 Sergei Magnitsky Human Rights Award in a ceremony in London on Thursday night. The award recognizes those who have fought for human rights in Russia and is named after a lawyer who was killed in a Moscow jail in 2009. <snip>

<snip> John McCain became a prominent critic of Donald Trump’s dealings with Russian leader Putin, criticism that the U.S. president strongly rejected.

McCain died in August from brain cancer at age 81.

Several other awards were made Thursday night, including to Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, and to the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who is serving a 20-year jail term in Russia.

Let us remember this day, the ninth anniversary of his death, the brave soul of Sergei Magnitsky.

And thank you Senator McCain for standing as, even though we did not agree on everything, a principled man of honor.

I don't see that. Putin and murderous oligarchs who have Russia by the throat are the enemy. yardwork Nov 2018 #7
With McCain's death, so went the last of Republican courage to support heroes like Sergei Magnitsky. SunSeeker Nov 2018 #2

Unfortunately, that seems to be true. It looks like the GOP is now on Putin's payroll. yardwork Nov 2018 #8

Russian people who gave their lives while resisting Putin's fascist dictatorship are being honored here.

Democrats have done a better job of honoring McCain than the Republican party ever has.
