Update: President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened to shut down large parts of the federal government over funding for his proposed border wall, openly quarreling with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in an extraordinary exchange that unfolded before the press in the Oval Office.
Trump has railed against congressional Democrats for refusing to agree to his demand for $5 billion for a border wall, but on Tuesday he asserted that "one way or another it is going to be built" and that he would have "no other choice" but to shut down the government if he doesn't get enough funding for the wall.
"I am proud to shut down the government for border security," Trump said.
This story will be updated.

(4,341 posts)Mexico will pay for the wall, that should be his first stop, he needs to show his base what a great negotiator he is, so go ahead and demand that Mexico pay for it. Why does he need 5b from the USA? Mexico has the checkbook ready to sign that 5b for him, right?

(46 posts)Trump absolutely needs to get his 30 billion for the wall because he knows it's the last chance he has to keep his base happy, without it they won't stick with him. He admitted that he's willing to shut down the government unless he gets it, that's all there is, no more negotiating. He needs to fulfill his political promise. Trump even stated that they stopped 'ten terrorists' because of the new wall. Of course, there is no 'new' wall, it's replacing sections of wall that were deteriorated or missing, but it was replaced with the same border wall as the rest of it, not the big soaring concrete structures that we've seen as prototypes which cost $1 million each to construct.
The Congress gave him 1.6 billion last year for the wall and so far the government has only spent 6% of that money.....six percent! Shutting down the government now is not going to sit right with his Republican Congress either. A government shutdown doesn't really have any immediate effect on people's lives. It delays military checks and they get paid twice a month so most shutdowns don't last more than a couple of weeks anyway.
OVERALL: In shutdowns, non-essential government employees are often furloughed, or placed on temporary unpaid leave. Workers deemed essential, including those in public safety and national security, keep working, some with pay and others without.

(46 posts)Everything I've read and observed regarding the caravan of thousands convinced me that this was a major effort funded by a special interest group in order to sway public opinion. Now who has a dog in that fight? The Republicans and specifically Trump. Coordinating thousands of people together at the same time takes money, takes organization and it takes time.
It's not a coincidence that a government shutdown was looming and all this happened just weeks before the midterm elections. It only takes a handful of organizers with a lot of money to hand out the people in Honduras and Guatemala with promises of amnesty in the U.S. to get people hopeful it's going to happen. Many of the people in the caravan admitted to being given money to travel plus clothes and food. They also confessed to being told they would be given asylum as long as they learned these words in English. "I am seeking asylum because my life is in danger in my country." These people were told they would be admitted to the U.S. for processing and given food, clothing, shelter and health care while they awaited their Visa. It was orchestrated, that's pretty much a sure thing.
The money that the Democrats offered would pay for addition bollard-type walls, just as we have throughout the Southern border. Trump promised the 'big beautiful wall' like one of the prototypes and those would cost far in excess of the 30 billion he's demanding.

(9,350 posts)I wish Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer would have asked Donald Trump why he is not going to Mexico to get Mexico to pay for the wall. Throughout the campaign Trump claimed that he would force Mexico to pay for the wall. Okay, so why is Mexico not paying for the wall. Didn't he claim, after being elected, that there were things he could do to make Mexico pay for the wall. Okay, well then force Mexico to pay for the wall.
