Federal prosecutors took a major step on Wednesday in their investigation of hush-money payments made to two women who said they had affairs with Donald J. Trump, announcing that The National Enquirers parent company was cooperating.
The company, American Media Inc., the countrys biggest tabloid publisher, played an important role in a scheme to keep the women silent in the months before the 2016 election so that Mr. Trumps chances would not be damaged, federal prosecutors said.
Under the arrangement, federal prosecutors in Manhattan agreed not to charge A.M.I. in return for the companys cooperation.
The agreement came after David J. Pecker, A.M.I.s chief executive, provided key testimony to prosecutors as they investigated the presidents personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen. Mr. Cohen received a three-year prison sentence on Wednesday in part for his involvement in the payments, which prosecutors said amounted to campaign finance violations.
