Broadway legend Carol Channing dies at 97, AP reports

By Sarah Halzack January 15 at 7:38 AM

Carol Channing, the raspy-voiced, saucer-eyed, wide-smiling actress who played lead roles in the original Broadway musical productions of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Hello, Dolly!” and delivered an Oscar-nominated performance in the 1967 movie musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” has died. She was 97.

Miss Channing was a gangly, dynamic, irrepressible presence on Broadway for more than five decades. Platinum blond and standing 6 feet tall, she made her breakthrough impression on audiences and critics as the beguiling gold digger from Little Rock, Lorelei Lee, in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1949).

Her rendition of two of the show’s most memorable songs, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” and “A Little Girl From Little Rock,” launched her career. Brooks Atkinson of the New York Times called her portrait of Lee a “most fabulous comic creation.”

The production ran for two years on Broadway and was followed by an extensive national tour. It was based on a 1920s book by Anita Loos, who wrote the play with Joseph Fields, and featured music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Leo Robin.

I was thinking about her today, too.

Seriously, I was.
I was listening to Guns 'n Roses 'You Could Be Mine' and for some reason her voice popped into my on the lyrics,
With your bitch slap rapping and your cocaine tongue
You get nothing done
I said, you could be mine

I really liked Ms Channing
A great performer and person

https://www.nytimes.com/1964/08/21/archives/hello-lyndon-joins-campaign-at-democratic-parley-next-week-herman.html

“Hello, Lyndon!,” a version of the title song of the Broadway musical “Hello, Dolly!,” will be introduced as a campaign song at the Democratic National Convention next week in Atlantic City.

The song will be sung before a group of women Democrats by Carol Channing, the star of the show. She will be accompanied at the piano by the song's composer, Jerry Herman.

Ten thousand freshly pressed recordings of the campaign song are scheduled to leave the St. James Theater tonight in a truck bound for the convention city. The records will be sold at the convention with proceeds going to Young Citizens for Johnson.

I was just looking at a completely unrelated article on my local newspaper's site and saw this as another story.

She was literally legendary and always so active out in the entertainment world, including regular appearances on Hollywood Squares.

Her voice was truly unmistakable.

R.I.P. and, condolences to her family, and thank you for your memorable performances.

Saturday night, I attended a local production of ‘Forbidden Broadway’, a collection of songs offering a gentle parody of many Broadway musical tropes.

One of them was a hilarious song sung by a Carol Channing expy remarking on how many times Channing played Dolly during her career. And how willing she would be to keep playing the role forever. The Great White Way, off-Broadway, cruise ships, community theater, school productions, she declared her willingness to do them all...

And then the news today.

I suppose now she truly can sing the role forever...

the Syracuse Symphony. Had to be the mid 1990's, Had very good seats near the front and to one side of where she did her quick changes. Saw a little more than I was expecting for a few seconds before turning away. Let me just say for her age she was in good shape for her age.
