UPDATED: House Dem Centrists Tell Trump To Take A Hike, Won't Meet On Shutdown

Source: Talking Points Memo

By Cameron Joseph
January 15, 2019 12:07 pm

President Trump asked a group of moderate House Democrats to meet with him on Tuesday, looking to drive a wedge between them and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). No dice, said the Democrats.

White House officials scrambled to find moderate House Democrats willing to meet with Trump Tuesday morning after the President demanded the meeting from aides.

But Democrat after Democrat turned them down, uninterested in giving Trump a chance to berate them, try to embarrass them or try to get them to split with House Democratic leadership and entertain offers to reopen the government while funding a border wall that are anathema to most of the party.

"Today, the President offered both Democrats and Republicans the chance to meet for lunch at the White House. Unfortunately, no Democrats will attend. The President looks forward to having a working lunch with House Republicans to solve the border crisis and reopen the government," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement late Tuesday morning.

Democrats turn down White House invitation for shutdown talks

BY JORDAN FABIAN AND SCOTT WONG - 01/15/19 12:08 PM EST

No Democrats will attend a lunch on Tuesday with President Trump designed to reach an agreement to end the government shutdown and fund a border wall, the White House said.

Trump had invited several moderate House Democrats to the White House in an effort to undermine Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has refused to grant Trump his demand for $5.7 billion in wall funding. But the group turned down the invitation.

“Today, the president offered both Democrats and Republicans the chance to meet for lunch at the White House. Unfortunately, no Democrats will attend,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

A group of nine House Republicans will go ahead and meet with the president, but Sanders said “it’s time for the Democrats to come to the table and make a deal.”

Is one that includes his idiotic money wasting distraction wall. It's HIS way of no way. That's NOT negotiating that holding America hostage with a loaded gun and saying gimme what I demand or the nation gets it.

I also think NO Democrats should go to the WH unless Mitch McConnell goes too since HE'S Trump's accomplice and refusing to let ANY House bill be voted on in the Senate unless Trump will sign it, which means it MUST have $$$ for the start of Trump's Folly wall.

Rayburn never had to even think about losing the house and the republicans in the Senate actually included liberals.

Finally, he was not there when the Democratic Party finally gave African Americans voting rights in the South with LBJ as President.

He actually presided over a House which kept FDR from including them in the New Deal. Not enough of a student of history to know if he tried to prevent that or even wanted to. But from FDR thru LBJ southern democrats were reluctant democrats at best. They loved the social programs the New Deal gave their (White) people. But rejected any attempt to expand them to the Blacks in the south.

It's not like Trump wants to negotiate, anyway. Like the article says, he just uses it to juice up his base with hatred and hostility. It's just a show.

Why anyone would talk to him is getting more normal as many see he can't do anything he says, and won't keep him word. He's just a corrupt lying criminal con man who has no power now, and has no way to remaining in power . Everyone hates him , and the gop now, and will be removed from office soon. Just a matter of time to before Democrats have complete control of all the government, then he'll reap what he sowed.

But I still maintain that Speaker Pelosi stands with the best of them. They never fought the forces she has. And until after Tip O’Neill none ever doubted having the majority. When I was a young man the House was assumed Democratic.
