KEY POINTS
Democrats want to table the negotiations over President Trumps border wall and end the longest-ever partial government shutdown as soon as possible.
But Republicans, such as Sen. David Perdue of Georgia, dont want Trump to throw away what they see as his strongest bargaining chip.
If Trump agrees to reopen the government, then wheres the leverage for the president in terms of getting them to move on the issue of the day? Perdue asks on CNBC.
-snip-
Perdue balked when asked Wednesday on CNBCs Squawk Box about the calls from Democratic leaders, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to reopen the government and continue separate border security talks.
Right now, what the Democrats are saying is, Well look, give us what we want and maybe well come back in two or three months and talk about what you want. Thats not the way negotiations work in the real world, Perdue said.
When pressed on the Democrats offer to reopen the government, Perdue suggested that such an agreement would undermine Trumps efforts to pressure his opponents into funding a border wall.
I understand that, Perdue said. But then, wheres the leverage for the president in terms of getting them to move on the issue of the day?

(11,885 posts)When the republicans controled everything he was also refused money for his not wanted or needed wall. The majority of the American people are against trumps wall, and as in debt as we are the money for it is just another boondoogle unless you're trump who'll skim money from others for it. That's why he wants it so bad, he'll make money from it. Its another scam.

(129,878 posts)The "leverage" was the fact that the bills the House passed were to FULLY FUND everyone for the rest of the fiscal year, EXCEPT DHS, which would have a C.R. to provide more time to discuss "immigration" and "border security".
Not counting DOD, DHS is the LARGEST department.
NONE of the rest of the agencies being held hostage have any mission that deals with the security aspects of "immigration" and "the border".

(47,711 posts)Trump's "my way or the highway" tactic is not how negotiations work in the real world. Trump does not believe in compromise and impulsively backs out of his agreements just for the hell of it. THAT is also not how negotiations work in the real world.

Why can't media and dems make this point over and over? If it were a good idea...it would happen?

(12,601 posts)Don't let him tap dance around the question by babbling on how much money the U.S. will make on the super-duper trade deal he just negotiated with Mexico. The money to pay for the wall is coming right out of the taxpayers' pockets.
Also, it's estimated that $5 billion will only pay for 700 miles of wall. How is he going to blackmail the country for the remaining $10 billion? Is he going to have another shutdown?
It's all part of Putin's plan to cripple and ultimately destroy the United States without firing a shot.
I agree with those who believe Trump is an unwitting accomplice of Russia. He's not smart enough to actively collude with Putin. Blow in Trump's ear and he'll follow you anywhere.

Koch's got their Guy at EPA ,Adelson got his 700 million Tax Break plus a court ruling to stop on line gambling, and Ricketts got the Bank regulators looking the other way.

Under our system of government, it is the responsibility of the legislature to perform their duties as they decide, not by the fiat of the executive
If Perdue wants to live in a state ruled by an authoritarian dictator, I suggest an extended vacation in Moscow

Perdue is a 'successful businessman' with lotsa money and was elected to Saxby "I like to golf more than represent" Chambliss's former seat.

(1,533 posts)Once that is done, if he won't bring up the bill that the Senate passed unanimously a month ago, reconciliation can begin. This is all on McConnell and the Senate, not the Democratic led House. Any comment from Dipshit should be met with "The House has passed a bill, go talk to McConnell."

(22,191 posts)having problems processing reopening the government and tying it to rump closing down the government because of a hissy fit/temper tantrum.
There are other things that republicans may want, in exchange (besides a stupid wall). Americans do want help on prescription drugs, health issues, immigration (our farmers are suffering via lack of workers to pick crops), as well as many other issues that you could take / give in exchange...it's called negotiation.
Ignore rump being that he has no negotiation skills what so ever.

(59,508 posts)Negotiations could continue with the government either open or closed. Trump is holding many government jobs hostage and where Perdue is correct it is because he needs that to pressure people to fund his wall.
This admits that there is NOT support through a normal legislative process to build the wall as he demands.
The problem with giving in is that we then would have a series of similar hostage taking - when we need to raise the debt ceiling (earlier than we would have had to before the Republicans tax legislation), and with actually passing funding for the government.
