Marine vet held by ICE for possible deportation is U.S. citizen, lawyer says
Source: CBS News
A Marine veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder was held for three days for possible deportation before federal authorities learned the 27-year-old is a U.S. citizen born in Michigan, lawyers said Wednesday. Jilmar Ramos-Gomez was a lance corporal in the Marines and received awards for service in Afghanistan.
"He was decorated with a national defense service medal, a global war on terrorism service medal, an Afghanistan campaign medal, and a combat action ribbon, among other awards," the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan said Wednesday in a statement.
"Why did they think he was a non-citizen? Did they get him confused with someone else? Who knows," ACLU attorney Miriam Aukerman said. "This is an individual who's incredibly vulnerable with a mental illness."

"Once he was released from our custody, he was under the domain of ICE. Where they take him is their process," Kent County Undersheriff Chuck DeWitt said. "Our procedures were followed."
DeWitt said he didn't know whether Ramos-Gomez protested when immigration officers picked him up. He was driven 70 miles to a detention center in Battle Creek and released after three days, after lawyer Richard Kessler contacted ICE on behalf of the man's family.

(33,643 posts)What are those exactly? Everyone w/Hispanic name that you arrest, you call ICE on? Is that the 'procedures'?
And you don't think to evaluate people for mental illness, and keep them away from ICE if they seem sick? Guess you just want any sick people off your bottom-line ASAP? I get it.

(9,981 posts)The ignorance of history in this country just irritates the hell out of me. The US and Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago in 1848. Accordingnto the History Channel, The treaty added an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
Many of the people living in those present-day states were of Mexican or Spanish heritage. Their descendents have just as much right to be in this country as anyone with European ancestry. The descendents of Native Americans have even more right, yet I remember an incident from last year where a couple called campus police because they thought two Young Native American men on a college tour did not belong there.

For example the idiot court clerk in Washington DC who demanded a "New Mexico Passport".

(3,764 posts)It gave the United States the Rio Grande as a boundary for Texas, and gave the U.S. ownership of California and a large area comprising roughly half of New Mexico, most of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. Mexicans in those annexed areas had the choice of relocating to within Mexico's new boundaries or receiving American citizenship with full civil rights.

(6,831 posts)WHY did ICE detain him at all ? EVERY GODDAM LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN THE COUNTRY HAS ACCESS TO THE NATIONAL [/b]FINGERPRINTING database. Every single member of the armed forces has been fingerprinted upon entry. The minute his name was put into the system, that information would have popped up immediately.
This was naked racism.
