57 percent of voters say they won't support Trump in 2020

Source: PBS NewsHour/NPR

Politics Jan 17, 2019 5:00 AM EST

With the 2020 presidential election already underway, 57 percent of registered voters said they would definitely vote against President Donald Trump, according to the latest poll from the PBS NewsHour, NPR and Marist.

Another 30 percent of voters said they would cast their ballot to support Trump, and an additional 13 percent said they had no idea who would get their vote.

Although the election is still nearly two years away, the large number of voters who oppose Trump as well as his low approval ratings suggest the president faces a “steep, steep incline” in winning re-election, said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.

“The president has had his base and not much else,” Miringoff added.

10 percent of Republicans plan to vote against Trump, and 21 percent are unsure? That's basically a death knell. Then you throw in 62 percent of independents say they're voting against him? Yeeeesh.

Nate Silver was saying on Twitter yesterday how Trump's strategy of doubling down on his base instead of moving toward the middle is a dumb strategy. Presidents who get slaughtered in midterms and then go onto win a second term usually do it because after midterms, they make concessions and move more toward the middle, which helps win independents.

By not doing this, Trump may be shoring up his base, but he's going to push away the majority of independents that voted for him in 2016 because he's showing he's not willing to compromise...and his base isn't big enough to carry him in 2020.

My mom and dad were evangelical Repugs and most of their tons of siblings were the same. They've also now mostly left us, out of the 16 siblings between them, only 5 are left. I believe all of them registered as Democrats around the time of WW2 or soon thereafter, but they all voted repug starting with Nixon. Mom was the more liberal (HA) she voted for Clinton once and Carter once. I wish they were still alive, miss them so much, but in a tiny selfish way I'm glad if they had to leave they did before he ran so their memories aren't sullied by their potential support of the person who is the antithesis of everything they ever believed in. I'd like to think that at least mom wouldn't have voted for him because of his "pussy grabbing" ways, but their church & Jerry Falwell did support the orange assmouth so believe dad probably would.

Glad to say that as of at least a few weeks ago, their church has now turned on drumpf, and the preacher gives sermons about not trusting bad politicians who lie about everything and seem more loyal to a foreign country than to the USA and that disregards God's will in everything he does. So I took that as a sliver of hope. A MAJOR conservative Baptist church in Northern FL turning against him is epic. Hope more are doing the same.

so, why is it so hard to believe 5% of the same party claim they will vote for him in 2020?

Its latest survey found that 87 percent of Republican respondents approved of Trump’s job performance during his second year in office, while just 8 percent of Democratic respondents gave the president positive marks.

Established friendly relations with China. Started the EPA, Clean Water Act and supported unionization. One of the reasons the USPS was split off from the government was so the employees could collectively bargain for their wages and benefits instead of begging Congress. He also helped to get the money to modernize it into a more effecient system.

A lot can happen between now and the 2020 election. That said, the economy's performance is probably buttressing Trump's numbers at this point. Given the rattling Trump has done via tariffs, trade negotiations, deficit inflation and the government shutdown I wouldn't be surprised if the economic wheels started falling off. I'd also remind everyone that the popular vote doesn't determine the next president, the Electoral College does. In case of ties, the final call goes to the Supreme Court. Both of those facts make me cautious and somewhat apprehensive about the next election cycle.

half of the 13% of undecideds don't vote for him that would be 63 to 64% not voting for Trump in 2020. Not bad in my eyes.
