Supreme Court to weigh New York City curbs on transporting handguns
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday stepped into the divisive issue of gun rights by agreeing to take up a challenge backed by the National Rifle Association to New York Citys strict limits on handgun owners toward transporting their firearms outside of the home.
The nine justices will review a 2018 lower court ruling upholding the citys restrictions after three gun owners and the NRAs New York state affiliate sued claiming the regulations violated the U.S. Constitutions Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
The case will be heard and decided in the courts next term, which starts in October and ends in June 2020.
The decision indicates a new interest on the court, where conservatives hold a 5-4 margin, on guns and is the first major gun case to come before the justices since 2010.

(98 posts)moving all semi automatics to the same classification as machine guns, This wouldn't actually take away the gun humpers guns, but it would force them into paying for yearly liscense and make them subject to ATF inspection.

(39,171 posts)if we can't even pass UBCs then fantasizing about even more draconian steps is a waste of time.

(5,559 posts)Machine gun owners are not subject to annual inspections or annual fees. My brother in law has a few and does not have this (he'd have a fit every year if it happened).
That being said, it still would make them subject to a long wait and a significant tax. Still a decent idea and probably more feasible than an actual ban / forced surrender.
Not overly concerned about the SCOTUS taking up this case, it sounds like an extremely specific challenge to a tiny part of NYC's licensing scheme and transport restrictions. Hard to see this having a wide impact when even the plaintiffs are being very specific

(8,747 posts)NYC has some of the most draconian gun laws in the US. If they have already issued you a premises license, (NOT a carry permit) and you can transport it unloaded in a range INSIDE city limits, that should be good enough.
