Phil Murphy joins call for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to resign

Source: NorthJersey.com

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam has no choice but to resign after his yearbook page shows a man dressed in blackface and another person wearing a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said on Friday night.

Appearing on "All in with Chris Hayes" on MSNBC, Murphy joined other politicians in calling for Northam to leave office.

"We’re the party of Barack Obama, we’re the party of inclusion," Murphy said.

Here in New Jersey, Democrats have been trying their best to eat their own in attacking Governor Murphy in the Katie Brennan case even though two county prosecutors have both refused to bring charges and even though Murphy himself had absolutely NOTHING to do with the alleged incident.

So it's quite ironic that a Democratic governor, Murphy, who is under attack while actual sexual predators like trump and kavanaugh sit in the White House and on the Supreme Court should be calling for another Democratic governor to resign for a year book photo from over three decades ago.

When are we going to stop the double standard of eating our own while their actual criminals dine on the taxpayers' dime and never resign?

But you don't hear these exact same Dems complaining about that.

We got an admitted fraud performed repeatedly by a Supreme court judge for over 6 years and you don't hear these Dems calling for his resignation.

We got a sexist in chief as a Putin President and that just fine by his party.

But our Dems got attack their own.

And it's only because the black caucus of the VA legislature has asked him to resign, that I'm inclined to agree that Northam must go. And while I think there's no question that in 1984 Northam was a racist, I still believe it is entirely possible that in the ensuing 30 years, he's changed -- been enlightened, if you will by, among other things, evidence of the horrendous rate of incarceration among black men, of police murders endorsed by police forces, and of a president who is and has always been blatantly racist whose supporters are racist or invincibly ignorant, or both. And maybe he's been paying some attention to the public contributions of black talent to the arts and science, as well -- they are too many to cite and too significant to ignore.

I still think that if he can make a case to the black caucus -- and only then -- he should stay in office. Otherwise, he should resign, with regret, but with full support of his successor.

If he would have owned up to it years ago at the beginning of his political career before he was elected and apologized for it and let the voter decide if they believe in his contrition or not that would be one thing. He didn't do it that way.

in the VA legislature has called for his resignation. Unless he can meet with them and convince them otherwise, he should resign. If he's lost the constituency that put him in office, he has to go.

Neither Black nor Byrd had to confront and out and out call to quit -- fortunately for them and, I think, for the country. But Northam is going to have to listen to the black caucus or, at the very least, talk with them openly about his past insensitivity and persuade them that he is a new man. That, or he has to quit.

A kid wearing a stupid costume doesn't mean he was a racist, it means he was a dumbass kid. Oh crap, I wore all sorts of stupid costumes when I was a kid, including a zombie and a Nazi storm trooper. Teenagers don't think about political ramifications or how will this look in 20 years? They just want to go to a party.

Yes the Governor should definitely apologize, and we need to move on. Somebody is ratf*cking us all over again.

Responding to the poster saying that he should apologize - the poster seemed to maybe not know that he had already apologized.

In terms of my own views on this topic, I defer to those who say that white people tend to dominant political discussions and ought to step back from this one in favor of other voices.

With that in mind, I am just doing my best to collect information and share what I am finding with my fellow DUers.

It seemed like he was going to resign today with so many prominent people and organizations calling on him to do so - although now I am seeing reporting suggesting that he is not going to resign and will claim that it wasn't him in the photo.
