MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors say a 31-year-old security guard fired five shots into the windshield of a school bus that had scraped his car on a snowy highway near downtown Minneapolis, wounding the driver but not striking a child who was on board.

Kenneth Lilly, of St. Paul, was charged Thursday with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He's due in court Friday and remains in the Hennepin County Jail.

According to the criminal complaint, the bus was trying to merge Tuesday afternoon when it apparently scraped Lilly's sedan. The bus driver said he was unaware the vehicles had touched, but there was paint from the bus on the car. Lilly stopped his car and tried to get on the bus but the driver refused, telling him there was a child on board.

Lilly, who was wearing his security guard uniform, pulled a handgun from his holster and fired at the bus windshield, wounding the driver's left arm and grazing his head. Police said the wounds weren't life-threatening and that his passenger, an elementary school student, was in the rear of the small bus and wasn't hurt.

A 31-year-old armed security guard walked in front of a school bus that had scraped his car on a snow-covered Minneapolis freeway Tuesday afternoon and repeatedly shot through the windshield at the driver inside, authorities say.

The gunfire grazed the side of the bus driver’s head and struck his left arm. The injuries were not life-threatening. An 8-year-old student also on the bus was not injured.

On Thursday, the Hennepin County attorney’s office charged Kenneth Walter Lilly, of St. Paul, with one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

Law enforcement authorities responded to a report of a shooting on Interstate 35W at Chicago Avenue at 2:14 p.m. Tuesday. They arrived to find a school bus and black sedan parked in a lane of traffic, according to the criminal complaint.

One more way to get a gun to shoot people, I guess.

Shooting a school bus with a child in it ought to be attempted capital murder. Why the lesser charge of attempted plain murder. Does Minn. not distinguish between violence towards children and towards adults?

The county attorney also said that there could be more charges. I'm guessing there may be grounds for a hate crime charge. Many of our school bus drivers are other than white minorities. At any rate, he's going to locked up for a very long time.

Schoolbus driver is shot, and bleeding, but the arriving officer calmly listens to the shooter's story of the bus sideswiping his car.

This may be why the charges are not more serious. This gives the nutcase guard some claim of being assaulted "first". I could not tell how long it was between this an the guard shooting up the bus.

I am glad this was caught on a camera. I think it will insure the shooter gets at least some time.
