Albert Finney, British actor, dies aged 82

Source: BBC

Oscar-nominated British actor Albert Finney has died aged 82 after a short illness.

He was a five-time Oscar nominee who began his career at the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his mark in film.

His big film break came as "angry young man" Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.

He went on to star in Tom Jones, as Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express, Erin Brockovich and Skyfall.

He was also superb in the musical Scrooge, and as an excellent Winston Churchill in The Gathering Storm.

He will be greatly missed.

I remember watching it as a kid and wondering who the guy was that played young Scrooge, because he really looked like a younger Albert Finney!

Hell of a talented man. Sorry to hear about his passing.

I've watched that movie more times than I can count. The chemistry between them was amazing. I am rather in awe of a lot of British actors. Their training is so much more diverse than in the U.S. and they seem to move effortlessly from period pieces to contemporary comedy. I can watch a mediocre movie with a brilliant actor just to savor the performance.

Considered a sex symbol in his young days, he was an excellent actor, in the British tradition of centuries of top level acting.

A friend's mother took her daughter and a couple of us to the movie not knowing what it was about. I think this was about 1964 maybe? Anyway, the mother was pretty embarrassed about what she took us to see.

I tuned in just in time to see the legendary chicken-and-oysters meal---the most joyously lewd feast ever captured in cinematic history.

A fine send-off for Finney, a great acting talent.

To his credit, he consistently refused any Imperial honours.

He used to say it was too ridiculous, as his father had been a master builder.

Working-class and proud of it to the end.

There are a few actors that I feel that way about. It doesn’t even matter if the movies aren’t that good because their acting is always good.

Thank you Mr. Finney!

I believe Albert Finney was the greatest actor of his generation. There were a lot of very talented young British actors that came of age after the Second World War and in my view he was the best. His performance in John Houston's Under the Volcano is my favorite.

early in their careers. He bankrolled Leigh's first film " Bleak Moments" and starred in Frears' first film "Gumshoe". Finney also cast an unknown actress in the only film he ever directed, "Charlie Bubbles". The young actress was Liza Minnelli. Finney was really an actor's actor.
