Virginia lawmaker backs off fast track for impeachment bill

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A Virginia lawmaker on Monday backed off his plans to swiftly introduce an impeachment bill seeking the ouster of the state’s leading black elected official as Democrats struggled to address revelations of past racist behavior and allegations of sexual assault roiling its highest levels of office.

The effort to impeach Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax was prompted by the emergence of two women who accused him of sexual assault in the 2000s. Fairfax has vehemently denied the claims and called for authorities, including the FBI, to investigate.

Democratic Del. Patrick Hope tweeted early Monday that he got “an enormous amount of sincere and thoughtful feedback” from colleagues after circulating a draft of his impeachment bill, and that he sees that “additional conversations ... need to take place before anything is filed.”

There’s been little sign of broad appetite for impeachment, with lawmakers set to finish this year’s session by the month’s end. But the Legislature is swirling with questions about lines of succession and the political fallout for Democrats should their governor, lieutenant governor or attorney general leave office, willingly or not.

1. So they're all ready to impeach him without any investigation?

It clearly says they aren't going to enter Articles of Impeachment.

An investigation is paramount and the 2nd woman seems quite compelling and ran crying & extremely upset to a friend IMMEDIATELY afterwards. As a former rape counselor, I will tell you that is very compelling evidence and if her friend testifies to this fact under oath, Fairfax is toast and MUST go. If a true investigation (not the faux Kavarape version) clears him by proving rw hit jobs, he will keep his job.

Oh, and Kavarape does absolutely need to have a true investigation by House Dems and get impeached for lying to Congress. The evidence was there but drumpf told FBI to ignore it. Dems need to get on this.

Did she at least tell a school employee or faculty member? Because at least there would be a mandatory investigation because of Title IX...

I'm just trying to understand why they were so scared to report anything back when Fairfax was a nobody.

Either way, drafting the articles for impeachment now is bad optics to say the least... But it will mercifully ALL come out in the investigation... I can't *WAIT* for that shit to start...

6. She had previously been raped and went to the president of Duke who basically dismissed her.

There was no investigation because the rapist was a member of the basketball team. Why would she go that route again after getting kicked to the curb the first time? And forget about Title IX, a friend's daughter was brutally raped on the FSU campus by 7 guys, was in the hospital for a week and can never have children. The president of FSU said we're sorry but you shouldn't have been walking alone at 9pm and did ZERO to help her or investigate. She was attacked from behind with a hood pulled over her head so she never got even a glimpse of who those asses were. Presidents of Universities often don't give a shit about their female students, it seems, especially when they're black which is true of both the current accusers and my friends' daughter.

Don't be so quick to judge when facts can be far different than they seem is good advice for both sides I think.

This is an even bigger story than Fairfax, if true...

Why isn't anybody calling for THEIR jobs?

Investigation before conviction, the opposite of what happened with Franken.
