WASHINGTON ― At a hearing on Thursday, Roger Stone took the witness stand to apologize for his Instagram post that disparaged Amy Berman Jackson, the federal judge assigned to his case.

Donald Trump's former confidant suggested he was broke and stressed, which led him to post a photo of Jackson on Monday alongside an image of crosshairs and a rant that called his case a "fix" and special counsel Robert Mueller a "Deep State hitman."

"How hard was it to come up with a photograph that doesn't have crosshairs in the corner?" Jackson asked.

"I can only say I'm sorry yet again it was an egregious mistake," he said. acknowledging that he abused her trust. "Perhaps I talk too much, but I am under enormous pressure."

The first post was a picture of Jackson with what appeared to be the crosshairs of a gun drawn behind her head. Stone's caption called special counsel Robert Mueller a "Deep State hitman," said his case was a "show trial" and implied that Jackson was biased as an Obama appointee and because she had ruled on a Benghazi-related case and "incarcerated Paul Manafort." "#Fixisin," Stone added to his post.

Stone's attorneys had argued for him to keep the ability to speak broadly about his case and politics. Writing and public speaking were essential parts of who Stone is, they said.

Years ago we had an incident with a young guy on our porch. I had to be in court and it was a parade of hard luck whoa is me stuff. It seemed to be how the game was played because all the lawyers were doing it too.
My case was the last of the morning- the kid lost his mother a few years before (ok I’ll give him that) then he didn’t get a football scholarship- he was 23 at this point - and on and on and on. The judge asked me if I had anything to say ad I was forgiving saying that he scared the hell out of us but he didn’t need to go to jail. I think he got Community service and a fine.
