The Food and Drug Administration has granted fast track designation to an investigational drug for treating emergency opioid overdose made by OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LLP, the drug maker announced Wednesday. Purdue, privately owned by members of the Sackler family through family-controlled trusts, is facing possible bankruptcy due to hundreds of lawsuits alleging the company fueled the opioid addiction crisis by aggressively pushing sales of its best-selling drug OxyContin and minimizing its dangers. The emergency treatment, a nalmefene hydrochloride injection, is an opioid antagonist that Purdue says has a longer duration of effect than naloxone, another drug currently used to treat emergency opioid overdose. The FDA's fast track designation will expedite nalmefene hydrochloride's development and path to approval. Purdue said it would not look to profit from the new drug, saying in a statement: "As part of Purdue's commitment to advance meaningful solutions to address the opioid crisis, the company will work to bring forward this option with the commitment not to profit from any future sales of this drug."

4. That's the way I read it.

It sounds as if there is a new drug in trials that is more effective at treating overdoses than the current method/drug. And the company has declared their intention to not profit from it. That sounds to me that, for once, they are attempting to do the right thing. I hope they keep their word.

6. This 'drug' has been around since 1919, has been sold in various formulations

since very shortly thereafter. Percodan and Percocet, to name a couple.

Basically Oxycodone has been government-approved ... like, forEVER.

And all Oxycontin is is time-released oxycodone. WITHOUT the toxic additive of acetaminophen, like Percocet has. Which is actually purposefully meant to destroy your liver if you abuse it over time.

A lot of what this family did was pretty shady, yes ... but ultimately, the vast majority of people who've died from oxycontin did so because they abused it and/or obtained it illegally and/or just gobbled 'em down without bothering to research what they were.

Actually the large majority of people who quote 'died from Oxy' also have other depressants like Xanax and Alcohol in their systems at the time, if you check the stats. An 'OC' death just means 'you died with a non-zero amount of OC in your system'. Doesn't mean OC alone killed you.

So basically, if you kill yourself with oxycontin (without meaning to) ... you pretty much just totally failed in the common sense department.

This is coming from someone who F'd up their own life massively in the early 2000's because this crap was all over the place, including my dad having a massive script. But it was still my choice to start messing with it. I just wasn't a TOTAL fool, so I never killed myself with it.

I mean the freaking dose was printed in big numerals on the pills ... 10, 20, 40, 80mg. White, Pink, Yellow, Green coatings, respectively.

The other side of the pill? It read 'OC'.

Know what you're taking. Know your limit/tolerance. Don't drink a buncha booze with it ... it's not rocket science.

And I don't blame a damn drug company for my own bad decisions. They didn't make me do the things I did to acquire it, ya know?

Also, throwing 'cocaine' into a stat like this is silly. It's not a drug people OD and die on with any regularity.
