Top Mueller Prosecutor Stepping Down In Latest Clue Russia Inquiry May Be Ending

Source: NPR

One of the most prominent members of special counsel Robert Mueller's team investigating Russia's attack on the 2016 presidential election will soon leave the office and the Justice Department, two sources close to the matter tell NPR.

Andrew Weissmann, the architect of the case against former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, will study and teach at New York University and work on a variety of public service projects, including his longstanding interest in preventing wrongful convictions by shoring up forensic science standards used in courts, the sources added.

The departure is the strongest sign yet that Mueller and his team have all but concluded their work.

Manafort has been sentenced to about 7 1/2 years in federal prison following two cases that stemmed from Mueller's investigation, although neither case involved alleged collusion with the Russians who interfered in the election.

Others who have left, according to the article, include the senior-most FBI agent working on the Mueller probe, Special Agent In Charge David Archey, who is now heading the FBI's office in Richmond, Va. Also, another special counsel prosecutor, Brandon Van Grack, left to take another job with the Justice Department dealing with enforcement of the FARA act. And NPR reports that WilmerHale, the private law firm that formerly employed Mueller and other members of his team, is preparing for the return of some of its lawyers.

FOR CONTEXT: Who are the members of Mueller's team?

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/30/us/mueller-investigation-team-prosecutors.html

Robert S. Mueller III, the special counsel, has marshaled prosecutors, F.B.I. agents and other lawyers to investigate Russia’s 2016 election interference and whether any Trump associates conspired. The team has secured indictments against dozens of people and three companies, one trial conviction and a handful of guilty pleas in the highest-profile political inquiry in a generation.

Each of the core prosecutors has a specialty, like political corruption, hacking or money laundering, many of which have featured in indictments. They come from familiar places: the Justice Department’s criminal division, federal prosecutors’ offices in New York and around Washington and a law firm where Mr. Mueller worked.

The makeup of the team has shifted as prosecutors and others have departed and some aspects of the investigation are wrapping up. Here is a guide to the key prosecutors and what we know so far about the cases they worked on.

it's been a steady parade of - "You know it's about to end ya know, you know it's about to end. By the end of the week, you know it's about to end, maybe by the end of the weekend. You know it's about to end you know..."

DUH.

Yes this is NOT going to be a never-ending story. There will be an end at some point when they are done or if someone from above decides it's time to obstruct justice and suddenly cuts them off out of the blue. I expect that with all those investigators/lawyers on the team, they were each given a chunk of this affair to handle and once they completed their specific assignments, they were DONE and are moving on. In the meantime, the rest of the folks are still working on their parts.

(sorry for the rant )

This is the same ol' same ol'. Heard it too many times already and it fell flat every time. It's done when it's done.

7. NYU seems is as good a place as any for an unabridged Mueller report to show up, though. Just sayin.

In the interests of the American people who paid for all this investigation and litigation, of course.

(of course nothing in it could be classified, which I think was why the previous deed was done the way it was)

Carrie Johnson's reporting does have some merit given who has departed the team.

... only 100+ active prosecutors on the job ...

PS - this guy left because the Manafort charges are wrapped up and that's what he came in for. Mission accomplished for this one heavy. The rest are ongoing. Stone hasn't even begun to feel the bite.

PPS - the Mueller report is being written in real-time, with every court filing. There won't be a "final report" till he runs out of things to prosecute. That could take a while. He's paid for thru September.

and we still have that incredible woman whose name begins with a Z that I can't recall in the moment; but it might be her turn at bat and I have a feeling she is devastating to criminals.

Zainab N. Ahmad

Along with Brandon L. Van Grack, who has left Mr. Mueller’s team, Ms. Ahmad prosecuted Michael T. Flynn, the president’s first national security adviser. They helped secure a plea deal and Mr. Flynn’s cooperation. During her time as a federal prosecutor in New York, Ms. Ahmad built her reputation by successfully pursuing high-profile terrorism convictions.
