Tunisian protesters smash windows, set fires in U.S. embassy

TUNIS- Tunisian protesters jumped over the wall of the U.S. embassy compound in Tunis on Friday and broke windows and set fire to trees, a Reuters witness said.

A large fire could be seen burning inside the compound. Police fired teargas at the hundreds of protesters who were demonstrating at the embassy.

I guess the guards were reluctant to shoot unarmed protesters (assuming they're unarmed).

How do you deal with this kind of religious mania? Is it even really about religion or is this just people with anti-American feelings using that as an excuse?

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula (aka Sam Bacile?), a Coptic Christian, apparently made the movie with Media for Christ, which has on its website CDs by Samuel Doctorian, an alleged prophet who says he's had a vision about the end of the world (http://biblelandmission.org/pdfs/angels.pdf).

I wonder if they weren't just hoping to help God speed things up a little bit...

The film seems crafted to force Obama's hand or force Obama out. And all of a sudden a new meme is that Obama doesn't go to security meetings; I think it all was coordinated.
The religious right are just handy tools; they don't care, though, one hand washes the other - or smears the other with slime.

Imagine the shit storm that would cause... I mean, I'm not saying they shouldn't protect themselves, I'm just pointing out that such an event would really make things worse.

I wonder if they are clearing embassies in certain hot spots to prevent such a thing from happening.

it would still only serve to inflame the situation... Again, not saying they should rollover if they are threatened, but the best thing to do is to avoid allowing such a thing to happen.

(I really hope I'm not coming off as an apologist for the extremist idiots who are doing this shit)

It would be better to prevent that situation from happening though. We're not going to magically calm the crowds of rioters down with anything we do right now (we can anger them more though) I'd just rather see us extract ourselves from the situation as much as possible..

for the Marines to start shooting. Put out an announcement that anybody who breaches the security at any US embassy will be shot on sight. If the host governments wont guarantee the safety of our citizens, it's up to us.

It's the responsibility of the host government to provide protection and they don't seem interested in that. If another American dies from this, all hell is going to break loose. It's time for Pres Obama to make a VERY public statement that it will not be tolerated and that the marines are armed and have orders to shoot to kill.
