Trump says Tiger Woods will receive Medal of Freedom
BY JORDAN FABIAN - 04/15/19 01:43 PM EDT
President Trump said Monday that he will award Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nations highest civilian honor, on the heels of the pro golf great's comeback win at last weekends Masters Tournament.
Spoke to @TigerWoods to congratulate him on the great victory he had in yesterdays @TheMasters, & to inform him that because of his incredible Success & Comeback in Sports (Golf) and, more importantly, LIFE, I will be presenting him with the PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM! Trump tweeted.

(8,652 posts)<snip>In short terms, Uncle Tom is labeled to persons, similar to snitch or betrayer, whose motive is driven by acceptance that doing slavery was just how the (antebellum) Southern society worked, whether the acceptance is spontaneous or coerced.
The term "Uncle Tom" is used as a derogatory epithet for an excessively subservient person, particularly when that person perceives their own lower-class status based on race. It is similarly used to negatively describe a person who betrays their own group by participating in its oppression, whether or not they do so willingly.[1][11] The term has also, with more intended neutrality, been applied in psychology in the form "Uncle Tom syndrome", a term for the use of subservience, appeasement and passivity to cope with intimidation and threats.
The popular negative connotations of "Uncle Tom" have largely been attributed to the numerous derivative works inspired by Uncle Tom's Cabin in the decade after its release, rather than the original novel itself, whose title character is a more positive figure.[2] These works lampooned and distorted the portrayal of Uncle Tom with politically loaded overtones<snip.

(6,110 posts)From what I have seen.
louis c
(8,652 posts)...it's that there is more to receiving the medal of freedom than being a great golfer.
Other than golfing, could you please tell me one thing Tiger has done to effect social justice or helping others?
Like when other athletes knelt to bring attention to the mistreatment of young men of color. Did Tiger speak up? or did Tiger suck up?
at140
(6,110 posts)I don't think he was ever involved in social justice issues. This thread is all about Tiger receiving medal of freedom. I am not by any means well versed on what basis medal of freedom is awarded. Most likely Trump is trying to milk a share of Tiger's tremendous feat in sports.
I am simply defending Tiger's extraordinary achievement without disparaging him as uncle Tom.
louis c
(8,652 posts)And you're right. Tiger was never involved in social justice issues. you made my point.
He did, however, find time to be used as a prop by Heir Trump on numerous occasions.
Maybe Tiger will receive the medal of freedom in a ceremony he can share with another sports world icon, Don King.
at140
(6,110 posts)I can admire a great sports achievement without using a litmus test of social justice.
Not everyone is active in social justice. Many are just too busy perfecting their trade.
From age 24-40 I worked averaging 60+ hours every week, many without pay.
I simply had no energy or time for social justice, and as a man with brown skin from
south Asia, I saw subtle prejudice everyday, but I simply out-worked all the others
and got ahead of most of them in spite of the prejudice against brown people not born in America.
In a way I furthered social justice in my outfit, because the company began hiring lot more
south Asians after watching my work.

(9,461 posts)it more. That being said, I hope that one day he'll share his experiences and help others who struggle with the same issues. Celebrities going to rehab for booze/drugs isn't a big deal. Going for "other things" including possible sex addiction is another. Also, he has had like 20+ injuries including several back surgeries and multiple problems with his left knee. Since I'm assuming he isn't addicted to opioids, he might be able to bring attention to the problem and help people afraid to have surgery. He's collapsed on the golf course from pain. He can probably reach people that doctors can't.

Can you separate the accomplishments from the personality? Woods is either the greatest or second greatest golfer in PGA history.

Three other golfers have won the award, Nicklaus, Palmer, and Slifford.

James Watson has also won the award. Also Whittaker Chambers. Bill Cosby as well.

The standard for the Medal of Freedom recognizes individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to... cultural or other significant public or private endeavors."
While his private life turned into a mess, there is no question that Tiger has been as important to the sport of golf as most of the other sports figures receiving the Medal have been to their sports.

Do you think Arnold Palmer shouldn't have been awarded the Medal of Freedom because his record isn't as good as Jack's? Or that Obama shouldn't have awarded the Medal to Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial because there are baseball players with better "records" than those three?
at140
(6,110 posts)During Tiger's prime, he won majors with far more strokes over competition than Nicklaus ever did.
Tiger won his first Master's with one of the highest margin of strokes over his closest pursuer. And he repeated it many times again. Nicklaus won most tournament by just a couple of strokes.
Not saying Nicklaus was the best player of his era. All I want to say is Nicklaus never crushed his competition like Tiger did during his prime years.

(4,138 posts)I definitely think that Tiger Woods is a reasonable pick, given the standards and precedents of previous recipients (and I'm someone that has zero interest in golf or televised sports in general). The MOF is supposed to celebrate cultural figures, among others, and sports are a huge part of our culture.
But if you look at previous presidents, Obama in particular, there are a wide range of fields represented - multiple arts, science, politics, business, etc. With Trump, almost all of his picks are either personal friends, or sports figures. Like everything else with Trump, it's just an extension of his ego.
Sapient Donkey
(1,568 posts)Tiger Woods seems to fit based on previous people who received it. I never gave it much thought until I saw Obama was being shat on by the right-wing for who he gave it to. I recall I was banned from commenting on Breitbart articles in which I posted a list to previous recipients to show there was nothing unusual about Obama's choices. They would delete the posts and ban anyone who brought that up. Such jackasses. Actually, it may not have been Breitbart, it may have been the even more ridiculous gateway pundit.
But that being said, I agree this is just Trump dong it for his egotistical reasons. I don't think Trump puts a whole lot of deep intelligent thought into anything he does or says.

But the PMF? Tiger had a ton of notoriety and money and he used it to mess up his life. So, he was on third base, slumped back to first base, and now he's on third again, And we're supposed to be worked up over someone finally doing the right thing and being a better example for his kids?
This is a low bar. I personally know parents and teachers and ministers who've done more than this.

(5,554 posts)https://www.eonline.com/news/889894/tiger-woods-pleads-guilty-to-reckless-driving-after-dui-arrest
The 41-year-old former golfer, who last won a championship in 2008, was booked on a driving under the influence charge in Jupiter, Florida after he was found asleep behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz, which was parked about 15 miles away from his home.
As part of his plea deal and diversion program, the four-time Masters champion will spend a year on probation, attend DUI school within a month, perform 20 hours of community service, attend a workshop where victims of impaired drivers discuss how their lives were damaged and pay a $250 fine within six months as well as court costs and make an additional $250 donation to Palm Beach County Victim Services.
If he completes his duties, his reckless driving charge will be expunged from his record. If he violates probation, it will be revoked and he could face a 90-day jail sentence and a fine of up to $500.
