Avenatti accused of embezzling nearly $2 million that NBA player paid ex-girlfriend
Source: LA Times
When Hassan Whiteside of the Miami Heat wired $2.75 million to Michael Avenatti in January 2017, the pro basketball player intended most of the money to go to his former girlfriend, Alexis Gardner.
Avenatti was Gardners attorney. An actress and barista, shed hired him just a few weeks before to negotiate a settlement of a potential lawsuit against Whiteside. Its unclear what she would have alleged. Avenatti quickly struck a $3 million deal, and the $2.75 million was Whitesides first payment.
Avenatti, prosecutors say, was entitled to take just over $1 million in legal fees, leaving the rest for Gardner.
Instead, they allege, Avenatti hid Whitesides payment from her and immediately took $2.5 million to buy a share of a private jet.

(18,672 posts)The one good thing he's done was put some of Trump's corruption on the front page for awhile, but truthfully, people have been saying all along Avantti was himself corrupt. I didn't want to believe it. Guess he won't be running for President anytime soon.

(60,010 posts)assuming a drug history.
Tho, actually, people with a coke/speed history are often mis-diagnosed as bi-polar when evaluated, if drug use is not considered.
I caught a strong whiff of Scaramucci like behavior when he started acting very aggressive about the Stormy case, then suddenly we are hearing presidential ambitions, it all came on pretty fast, which made me go hmmmm.
then again, he could be a hot shot lawyer who fell in love with his own bullshit. That and L.A. happens a lot.

(6,936 posts)Paying construction workers 75% of what's due or just not paying them. He knows they'll settle instead of paying a lawyer ten times what the remaining 25% would be.
Avenatti is a crook, but no less of one than a setting President.

I'm sorry for his clients, like Stormy Daniels and the one in this case. They were abused -- and he then abused them as well.

(3,284 posts)Opposition to Trump doesn't automatically make someone a good person. Furthermore, not everything is part of some grand conspiracy theory. Odds are he's being accused of this because he's a scumbag and a grifter who steals from his clients. This is merely one of many similar accusations.

(5,231 posts)One thing that can be said for him--he wasn't president or president-elect when he (apparently) stole money.
e.g. where'd all of the inaugural funds go, red don?

(37,648 posts)This stuff is in bank records. His former firm is suing him, too, I think.
My guess is that he's going to prison. He's done some serious embezzling from his clients, and maybe others. I feel for the ones he stole from. They may never get their settlement money.

(5,803 posts)sounds like drugs or a mental disorder, or both. To think that he could get away with something like that.
