Joe Biden enters the presidential race, testing whether his time has come -- or come and gone

Source: Los Angeles Times

When Joe Biden ran for president for the first time, 30 years ago, the World Wide Web had not yet been invented. When he ran again 10 years ago, Twitter was in its infancy.

Now, with his announcement Thursday that he is launching a third bid for the presidency at the age of 76, Biden is asking Democrats to decide if his time has come at last, or if it has come and gone for a man who has been in politics for nearly half a century.

Biden has teased his announcement for months, building anticipation. With his near-universal name recognition, vast political network and long government resume ó 36 years in the Senate and eight as Barack Obamaís vice president ó he has consistently sat atop polls of Democratic voters nationwide and in states holding early primaries.

Now, his official entry into the race has potential to give new shape to the sprawling candidate field. As a popular centrist well known to most Democrats, he poses an obstacle to lesser-known candidates laboring to gain traction in the big field.

2. An inspiring video

and what a difference between Bidenís message and the hateful spewing coming from that thing in the White House.

3. I guess still relevent, then, is Richard Ben Cramer's

book "What It Takes", an in depth study of the 1988 Presidential primary candidates including Biden.

50 years is a long time in politics and Biden carries significant baggage from his many campaigns and years in the Senate.

13. Biden will be a target rich environment for Trump

and the GOP. Go back to 1988, you have the plagerism, the head injury and subsequent hospitalization from the car accident that killed his wife and daughter, his patronizing attitude toward Anita Hill and more.
These will all be used to drive wedges between and among Dem voters just as similar issues (email, health, neither of which were even true) were used against Clinton.

Through in Florida: all within 1%. Biden will win them all.

I want to beat Trump, period.

22. You are correct, Biden was not part of the accident,

but he did have surgery for brain anuerysms. IIRC, he was given only a 50-50 chance of survival. I stand by my comment that this health issue will end up being exploited by the GOP.

4. Everyone has baggage

After 50+ years everyone has baggage. With him, it's known, it's all been laid out, written, diagnosed over and over and over again. However, that being said, and with all the respect and admiration in the world for Joe, it's time for a fresh new perspective to guide this nation forward. We need an aggressive, forward thinking expansive approach to our future. We need to demand and not settle for anything less than accountability, compassion and empathy from our next, and all future representatives, especially out President. It's not that Joe doesn't possess those traits, but we need youth and farsightedness now, there is too much at stake for our children, and all future generations.

25. At his age, his running mate will be critical

Fully agree about new blood. For no other reason than that this election will depend not just on getting out the base but on inspiring those who've never cared enough to vote. But with no one new with a charisma that really stands, Biden has a reassuring stability and predictability. Everyone else is still a gamble.

16. Too early. He doesn't need to pick one until he's the nominee.

His VP pick may be one of his current primary opponents.
