Trump lashes out suggesting he could stay in office after two terms, amid poor approval ratings

Source: Independent

Donald Trump has lashed out at his favourite bogeyman the news media in a Twitter thread suggesting the American people would ask him to stay in the White House beyond two terms, in violation of the US Constitution.

The tweets come amid reports that Mr Trump's own campaign has conducted polling showing him losing in key 2020 battleground states to Joe Biden, and as public polling shows him losing to many of the top Democrats vying for their party's nomination. Mr Trump has meanwhile lashed out at the idea, and has said that his internal polling actually shows him "winning everywhere."

"The good news is that at the end of 6 years, after America has been made GREAT again and I leave the beautiful White House (do you think the people would demand that I stay longer? KEEP AMERICA GREAT), both of these horrible papers will quickly go out of business & be forever gone!" Mr Trump tweeted on Sunday morning, shortly after attacking the New York Times and Washington Post both as a "disgrace to our Country" and the "Enemy of the People."

-snip-

The suggestion that the American people would want Mr Trump to stay in the White House after eight years as president is also not a new one, but shows that the president has the idea on his mind in spite of its obvious unconstitutionality. American presidents are limited to being elected to just two four year terms as a result of the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which was ratified in 1951.

3. The words of an avowed fascist. Wake up, America.

Its time to take action while we still can.

Day by day, this sham of an administration is tearing up the fabric of democracy while we sit back and wonder what we should do. Will we still be twiddling our thumbs after he bans any media but his own? Will we be sitting around looking dumb as he jails each and every vocal critic? Will we sit around looking stupid when he thinks he can run a third term? How long will we put up with Comrade McConnell and his loyal band of blind ideological idiots?

Wake the fuck up and do something. Time may be running out faster than you think. The closer we get to 2020, the closer the adversarial involvement in our elections will become.

Take the chance. Make the tough decision, or forever shut up and live with one party rule for the rest of your life.

damage on America and the rest of the world. He needs to be stopped before there's nothing left.

43. What we need is to STOP having this conversation.

We need to stop giving this ridiculous fantasy of his any traction.

He seems to think this is up for debate. No, donnie. It's not. The Constitution - you know, that thing you've been wiping your ass with for two years -- will hold.

You will NOT remain in office longer than the law allows.

If you refuse to leave, we will take you out by any means necessary.

7. Fuck off, fascist fathead.

You've done around 8 days of actual presidenting, in the last 2 + years. At this rate, you'd have to have do a hundred and ninety more terms to actually perform the work owed from one presidential term.

10. Trump has become our crazy uncle who talks incessantly and just makes things up.

He embarrasses the hell out of us, especially on the international stage, and he endangers our national security every day with his leaks and his buddy-to-buddy unmonitored talks with Putin. I wish someone at the Pentagon had not leaked about their decision not to share sensitive information with Trump because now hell try to force them to do so, but it actually relieves me somewhat that saner headers will not follow his every order. If he refuses to leave office after he loses in 2020, surely we have people who will escort him out.

11. He's mentioned this several times now. People would be unwise not to take it seriously.

Just like, "Russia, if you're listening...we need those missing emails!!!" (and the emails were forthcoming in the next day or two)

I would not put it past McConnell to try to change the Constitution so that Trump could serve a third term. That's exactly the sort of thing he'd do.

We must beat Trump in 2020 by a large enough margin to overcome the Russian hacking and the Russian-connected "third parties" (like Jill Stein), which will syphon votes from the Democrats.

12. McConnwll can't do this. He'd need a much larger GOP majority in the Senate, plus a large GOP

majority in the House, then the backing of most state legislatures.

There's more of a risk from a constitutional convention requested by a 2/3 majority of state legislatures.

33. Well fortunately a Constitutional convention can only propose amendments.

Every one of them would still need to be ratified by 3/4 of the state legislatures.

just declare a national emergency and suspend elections, and hope he has enough control of the government to stay in power.

It's nothing but a fantasy and we should stop treating it like anything but.

McConnell can't change the Constitution without an amendment. Not happening. Welcome to Constitution 101.

The same Constitution that has absolutely NO mention that the Supreme Court has the power to decide a Presidential election (see Bush vs Gore)?

Who's going to stop him, if he stays? Who's going to arrest him? The S.Ct. is stacked with Trump loyalists.

Him staying for an extra term is about as silly as an orange haired reality show billionaire becoming President.

23. In fairness, two terms would equal leaving office a little less than six years from now.

January 2025. The rest of his statement, like all of his statements, is absolute garbage, though. If he thinks to just squat in the White House after he loses an election or after his second term is up (God forbid), he's stark raving bonkers. Despite the fact that the military tends to break conservative, I don't see them siding with him in such a scenario.

34. When he loses in 2020 he will claim the election results are fake, demand recounts in every state

he loses, file lawsuits everywhere and never concede or leave willingly. He will foment some kind of uprising among his base, though I doubt many of them will actually risk their lives for Trump.

In the end, he'll set up some kind of government-in-exile down in Mar-a-Lago, where he will spend the rest of his miserable life tweeting, calling in to FOX News and Limbaugh, spreading his lunatic conspiracy theories and doing everything he can to delegitimize the next administration.

We will never be rid of this monster. Trump will be in our lives till the day he dies, and beyond. For the next thirty years we will be reliving the entire nightmare through history books and memoirs.

24. Agreed, the military wouldn't just sit there and let him declare himself President for life.

Even though the armed services largely tend to break conservative in voting and ideology, I can't see them just shrugging and allowing him to stay in office if he's voted out or his second term is over. Just my opinion, but I don't think he's all that popular with the higher-ranking folks in the officer corps. He shits all over McCain on the daily, and McCain was one of their own.
