Turkey's ruling party has lost control of Istanbul after a re-run of the city's mayoral election, latest results show.

The candidate for the main opposition party, Ekrem Imamoglu, won 54% of the vote with nearly all ballots counted.

He won a surprise victory in March which was annulled after the ruling AK party complained of irregularities.

His opponent, ex-PM Binali Yildirim, has conceded. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the winner.

1. What now? Gonna declare this election doesn't count either? Buckle up, something like that is coming

Dictators don't lose (even indirectly) with dignity.

2. Thank you for posting this.

I listened to BBC World News last night for a more in depth report on this. It is more important than people realize.

Who knows what Erdogan will do?

3. "Whoever wins Istanbul, wins Turkey," says Erdogan

Erdogan will probably have Imamoglu arrested on bullshit charges

4. that's good - Erdogan's attempt to cancel the first result was dodgy

He didn't seem to have any evidence of irregularities and was just abusing his power. Hopefully this will strengthen the democratic opposition to him.

6. I remember back in 1968 while on a Navy carrier that visited

Istanbul it was not so friendly. The first Liberty boat was attacked by protesters and injured some sailors, but we stayed. I remember walking Shore Patrol without being allowed to carry a night stick.
Several unsuspecting sailor's backs were sprayed with black ink from squirt guns.

After that liberty incident was cancelled there.

13. Hopefully the secularist are able to push back the fundamentalists.

Itís almost seems a parallel to here. The right wing Christians in the rural and suburban areas are the driving force of modern republicans
