Former President Jimmy Carter questioned the legitimacy of Donald Trump's presidency on Thursday, saying he would likely not be in the White House if the Russians did not interfere in the 2016 presidential elections.

“I think a full investigation would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016. He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf,” the former president, who served between 1977 and 1981, said at a panel hosted by the Carter Center in Leesburg, Va.

Pressed by moderator and historian Jon Meacham on whether he believes Trump is an “illegitimate president,” Carter stared, and then said smiling, “Basically, what I said, I can’t retract.” Carter’s remark drew laughs from the audience and Meacham.

Carter has not been an especially vocal critic of the president, and has sometimes even praised Trump's policies. The oldest living president and Trump also spoke over the phone in April after Carter wrote to the president about his trade negotiations with China.

Carter also called for Trump to condemn Russia for their meddling in the election during the Thursday event, and said he should “admit that it happened," as the intelligence community has already stated.

Former President Jimmy Carter said Friday that he believes President Trump only won the 2016 election because Russia interfered to help him defeat Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

“There’s no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the elections and I think the interference, although not yet quantified, if fully investigated would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016,” Carter said at an event in Leesburg, Va.

“He lost the election and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf,” Carter said.

When asked by moderator and historian Jon Meacham if he believed Trump was then an “illegitimate” president, Carter replied: “Based on what I just said, which I can’t retract.”....................................................

Additionally, all of Trump's appointees are illegitimate. Bush stealing the election on 2000 was merely a warm-up, a way for Republicans to test the waters to see how much they could get away with. 15. I think this is huge news, whether it gains traction remains to be seen.

First, President Carter has lived a life true to helping make the world a better place. He's walked the walk.

Second, his long record of observing international elections gives him a substantial amount of street cred. His words here carry weight.

And third, although his observational comments could be interpreted as a departure from the norm of not criticizing subsequent presidents/administrations, the fact he stated his opinion speaks volumes about the importance of what he said. Especially because of who he is and how he's lived.

In a different world, the MSM would make hay with this and help to finally turn the tide. My cynical self just can't venture the guess anymore.

Jimmy is questioning the legitimacy of Trump's presidency in that he does not see the Trump win as legitimate. Take it from there to uncharted territory regards to the crimes involved. Nancy Pelosi on the subject of impeachment recently said, she would really rather see Trump in jail or prison, rather than the process of impeachment. Jimmy seems to be indicating more in that direction than impeachment. Again it is a matter of interpretation in so far as one sees it. And if you were to really think about it, can a republican controlled senate be trusted to do the right thing ?
