Mike Pence says he'll bring TV cameras on tour of border facility as lawmakers voice alarm at conditions

Maureen Groppe, USA TODAY Published 10:25 a.m. ET July 11, 2019

WASHINGTON – Vice President Mike Pence is vowing to bring cameras along on Friday when he visits a Border Patrol facility in Texas, which he described as "overwhelmed and overflowing."

"We're going to let people see the facility – a facility that is providing care, providing hygiene, providing healthcare and support," Pence said Wednesday. "But we're also going to see a system that is overwhelmed."

When Democratic lawmakers toured Border Patrol facilities earlier this month, they were asked to turn over their phones and any other recording devices. But Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Democrat from Texas, defied the request and later posted video he took on his phone of the crowded conditions at a center in El Paso.

The deaths of migrant children in border detention centers and reports of dangerously overcrowded conditions have sparked an outcry. The Democratic-controlled House Oversight and Reform Committee is holding a hearing on the issue on Friday, the same day that Pence will be traveling to McAllen, Texas, to tour a detention facility.

It will be a sham. The camp is being cleaned up. The press should insist on touring a different camp at the last minute.

He knows any place he goes is going to be spit-shined and polished. Pick a random site and don't let them know you're coming beforehand. Then take the cameras inside and show the world. Christian in name only.

To roll up, kick in the doors of a random concentration camp and stream it live.

At the same hour Pence is making his telegraphed sham visit, a member of Congress should show up unannounced at another facility with cameras. Record everything. Even if it's just security personnel insisting that they not gain entry. That would be far more telling than the VP "visiting" a facility with a week's notice to scrub down...

Whatever he films is not going to make a damn bit of difference anytime soon. He should volunteer to live in one of the facilities chosen at random by AOC. Maybe that is where Sean Hannity can fulfill his promise to undergo water boarding. Still waiting, Sean.

They will move out 90% of those being held, and offer those left a green card if they just Say how happy they are.

How about this Mike. You and AOC get on a plane and once in the air she announces where you are going. And you go in with her and the cameras to a place that has had no time to prepare.

back from New England last week. They had to plan and stage a tour for the press, to get them to shut up about these kids. And such an endeavor would require a few days to clean up the mess and intimidate the children, and to pull the wool over the eyes of the reporters who will no doubt buy this BS hook, line and sinker.

There are scores of concentration camps. Many at the border, and probably an equal number scattered throughout the country. (I saw lengthy list last week, but didn't bookmark it.) So, sure, Pence will tour a Potemkin village of a camp and declare that all is well. I would hope that Pence's god won't be fooled and that Pence will be heading to "The Other Place" when his time comes. And maybe - and this is horrific to Pence - without Mother.

of course it's going to look better than what's been described. They'll probably spirit 3/4 of the detainees away for the day so it will resemble the dorm at the local college rather than a gulag.
