LOS ANGELES (AP) California is suing a nonprofit that sends care packages to combat troops, accusing it of misleading donors about its affiliations, engaging in political activity and paying fees to its directors' for-profit companies.
The lawsuit alleges the charity Move America Forward invaded the privacy of injured veterans by using their names and stories to solicit donations without their permission and falsely claimed to have a partnership with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
"Our troops and their commitment to our country should never be exploited in deceitful solicitation gimmicks, but unfortunately they are," state Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Wednesday.
The lawsuit alleges the charity violated IRS rules by providing free office space for the political action committees Move America Forward PAC and Tea Party Express.

(17,984 posts)A decent Charity. The one I give to, a Military group gives 20%. Goodwill is a racket, building fancy new buildings all over. The owner lives in a million dollar mansion, pays employees low wages, uses your charity to make himself wealthy.
I guess I will stick to the Church and FISH. I know what they do.

(26,291 posts)they are valuable rather they are sold for max profit which is why most of the stuff in the stores themselves is essentially the cheap junk.

(17,984 posts)A huge profit off donations. A brand new, really big store is going up here and they are opening new stores all over. Where is so much money coming from?
It is beginning to seem like a pyramid scheme. I remember when they had one place. A 4 story building where they trained handicapped people for jobs that were needed.
One store is in an exclusive area that is like a Department store with fancy merchendise.

(10,175 posts)Turns out like with the NRA, little man Putin compromised them too. It's in the FBI report on Russian interference ( at least the one that came out before Barr.).
I give to my local chapter of Planned Parenthood and the Democratic party.

(10,175 posts)There's a church down the road from me that I attended back when W and Cheney were turning the presidency into a little kingdom. At first the people at the church seemed nice.
But then the pastor started preaching the RepubliCON talking points from the pulpit and no matter how often I complained he kept at it. Then the racists started with their comments. And this was a standard Lutheran church. So I quit, but it was the start of my realization that there is no god.

(17,984 posts)A few years ago. Investigative Reporting showed Churches all over Politicking. Catholic Church was the worst, front page exposure. People were furious.
But they still do it. And it is hurting them.
Our young Pastor preached on how the Church has to change, both sides need to move closer. He asked for ideas to help improve because Churches are losing so many, the young.
As I walked out the door I heard, That means we have to accept gays! I heard nothing close to that so you see what Pastors are up against.
Anyone talks politics,I walk away because I am hearing a message I need from the Pulpit.

(9,998 posts)I donate used items to a local charity that runs a thrift store that helps to support local education needs. For example, many poor students who will be first-generation college students need coaching help, which is paid for with proceeds from the store, to get them through the application process and to help them identify how to apply for aid.

(17,984 posts)I will give them to him to take. Some items I have like a big box full of hand crotched and others like new will go to FISH for tornado victims here. While purging our Church had a clothing, food and basic health needs for victims.
I am really proud of all the Churches, Fire, Police Departments, YMCA and volunteers who are still working daily to help the hundreds of homeless. One local furniture store donated 1000 mattresses.
I do not mean to complain. There are by far many good people in this country than the other kind.

Sal Russo is the king of Astroturf, and has been on my radar from the get-go.
