Paris Sizzles, London Boils As Record Heat Threatens Europe
Source: Associated Press
PARIS (AP) -- Hot, hotter, hottest! Paris, London and points across Europe are bracing for record temperatures Thursday as the second heat wave this summer bakes the continent.
Climate scientists warn this could become the new normal in many parts of the world. But temperate Europe -- where air conditioning is rare -- isn't equipped for the temperatures frying the region this week.
So tourists frolicked in fountains to seek relief and authorities and volunteers fanned out to help the elderly, sick and homeless hit hardest by the heat. Trains were canceled in Britain and France, and French authorities urged travelers to stay home.
One by one, heat records are being broken across Europe. On Thursday, the Paris area could be as hot as 42 C (108 F) as a result of hot, dry air coming from northern Africa that's trapped between cold stormy systems. London might see 39 C (102 F). And swaths of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland could face temperatures exceeding 40 C (104 F)...

Belgium and Germany recorded all-time high temperatures Wednesday. Germany's record of 40.5 degrees (104.9 F) will likely be very short-lived, because the German Weather Service is expecting even higher temperatures Thursday.
Commuters walk across London Bridge in the UK heatwave.
UK Sees Hottest July Day on Record, BBC, July 25, 2019..The previous record for July was 36.7C (98F), and the Met Office believes the UK could still break the all-time record of 38.5C on Thursday. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-49106092

As we focus on the political follies of men, there is an existential crisis is that continues unabated and ignored. We are in the last stages of killing life on our planet, Earth. A recent UN report states that humans have killed 83 percent of all wildlife on this planet. (Chickens are the most plentiful bird on the planet today) and 50 percent of all natural plant life is gone. The web of life is stressed and frayed.
This report predicts dire consequences for you and me and every sentient being on this planet. Humans are committing planetary suicide by degrees through petty political fighting and by ignoring the crisis because of our competitive, consumer-driven lifestyle.
In 1972, MIT programmed a computer model of our then current American lifestyle that has spread around the globe; it predicted the total collapse of planetary civilization by 2040. The model says we are on track; but, physical evidence points to a more rapid decline.
The climate crisis rages worldwide with ever hotter, longer droughts and fires, floods surpassing the 100 year mark time and time again; the worlds population continues to burgeon having doubled since 1970 to our current 7.7 billion people.

(10,908 posts)Just like around here in the U.S.. I live in a townhouse complex and I'm just amazed at all the air conditioners churning away even in the early morning, when, FFS, it's in the 60's or low 70's outside. Nobody thinks of blowing in the cool air with a box fan. Or supplementing the A/C with fans.

(36,745 posts)Keep a couple of box fans going. U can run less A/C when the air is moving

(19,246 posts)And much of human civilization will crumble to a state of civil war, warlords and violence as infrastructure fails, crops fail, and anger boils over. Think Somalia, Sudan or Syria. The cost of such efforts will simply overwhelm nations one by one.
I give us 40 yr before this happens, tops.

(101,320 posts)Today the Met Office observations team has received a new provisional figure of 38.7 Celsius from Cambridge University Botanic Garden. The current highest temperature on record for the UK is 38.5 Celsius, recorded in Faversham in August 2003.
...
As the official source of meteorological statistics for the UK, we take the quality of our recordings very seriously. We are talking about a potential new record for the highest temperature recorded in the UK and we therefore need to thoroughly investigate the observation with our partners at Cambridge University Botanic Garden through statistical analysis and by visiting, to check the site and equipment and ensure there are no potential problems.
The Met Office observations team will carefully analyse this figure, along with any other readings submitted over the coming weeks and will keep the public, our partners and government updated."

Not looking forward to August though.
No AC - 2 ceiling fans, 4 small fans and a north-south facing flat, so we do get a breeze.
