The Trump administration revealed new details of its $16 billion aid package for farmers hit in the U.S.-China trade war -- with key provisions meant to avoid large corporations scooping up big payouts at the expense of small farmers.

In 2018, payout to individual farmers hurt by the trade war with China was capped at $125,000; this time it has been raised to $250,000 per person or legal entity, with a cap of $500,000 across three categories -- for those who produce soy as well as vegetables and pigs.
The cap comes in response to claims of significant abuse in last year's $12 billion trade relief package.

Eligible farmers will receive a minimum of $15 per acre and a maximum of $150 per acre, regardless of specific crop, the exact amount determined county by county. Three groups of agricultural producers are eligible for assistance: farmers who grow row crops; those who produce specialty crops such as nuts, cranberries and grapes; and producers of dairy and pork.
Fifty percent of farmers' aid will be paid out at the end of August, in the first of three payments.

(60,010 posts)You may remember that fairly recent story of the 2 cattle brothers in Brazil who got millions from trumps first farm aid giveaway.
What happens is that they, and Chinese mega corps, have bought pig, chicken and beef farms here in the US.
China bought Smithfield, the famous ham producer, and Pilgrim's Pride chicken
They run these farms via US subsidiaries.
trump gives AG money to the subsidiaries, which funnels right back to the original company.

(1,123 posts)the fuckhead occupying (illegitimately) our White House created the conditions that precipitated this "adversity" in the agricultural community and now we have bail them out with billions of our tax dollars! The Dem leadership, officeholders, and candidates should be mentioning this travesty to the media on a daily basis because the CONS would certainly do so if they were handed such an opportunity.

(12,586 posts)Oh, and maybe some tidbits for the "family farms" which are being absorbed by the corporations ("Resistance is futile!" ), but we all know who's going to get the biggest amount of this taxpayer-funded giveaway.
